Hi guys I've got a question, Does Fender Standard Jazz bass accept Fender Vintage Reissue Nickel Keys or Hipshot HB3?

The Standard MIM uses the same tuners as the Highway One.
Specs are: 11/16"(18mm) peghead holes. Mounting hole spacing is 1" across the top, 25/32" across the bottom, and 1-5/16" top to bottom (on center).

The Fender Vintage Nickel and Hipshot HB3 mounting specs are identical: Mounting hole spacing is 1-1/8" across the top, 1" across the bottom, and 1-1/2" top to bottom(on center). Requires 11/16" peghead holes.

So the answer is that they will for sure fit the peghead hole but the screw holes will not match up, so you'll be doing some drilling. It appears that the plate will fully cover or almost fully cover the Standard/Highway One tuner holes though.

Both of the sets you are asking about are reverse Pre-CBS tuners. Vintage reverse tuners take some getting used to since they wind backwards. They are made to replace the original Kluson tuners on pre-CBS basses. I'd really give it some thought before using parts not really intended for your bass, but with some careful drilling of pilot holes they will work. I know I probably would not do it.

If you need new tuners, and your title for the thread suggests that you do, I'd just buy the Mexi-Highway One set of Fender tuners which are very reasonably priced. They are perfectly good tuners and half the cost of the two options you are considering. Just what I'd do. You can do the nickel thing if that is the look you want. They may work, but not with the existing screw holes.

Good luck and I hope you get it the way you want it. Life is too short to not have it the way you want it!

thanks for that suggestion, I'm still having my thoughts though on using pre CBS on Fender Standards well i think they kinda look cool but as you said they would fit the only problem is drilling new holes at the back right?

but I've been considering on getting standards or Hipshots HB7 that would directly fit. Or go with the pre CBS and make my bass look more like those 60's.. Thanks again for the answers I'll think about it ^_^

Drilling 16 new pilot holes perfectly is a real long-shot. I'd bet against it unless you are an experienced tuner hole driller.

If it ain't broke and there ain't a problem...then there is nothing to fix. Replacing fully functional tuners is not really an upgrade for any reason but cosmetics.

I guess if how the tuners look is important to you then you might want to do it. If you put the nickel tuners on then next you'll want a nickel bridge, knobs, string tree etc to get the whole nickel thing going on. So you'll be throwing more money in for all that eventually too. I really don't see any advantage other than you just want to do it.

i recently read some threads at talkbass forums they said that hipshot hb2 or Schallers BMFL would not fit in the MIM's so does that mean it won't work with the pre CBS either?

When I was going to replace my mim tuners I was told that the HP7 were a perfect fit no drilling. I ended up just leaving well alone as the bass no longer goes out of tune I guess because I had time to break it in a bit.

Has anyone replaced their MIM P bass tuners with Hipshot HB7s? Are they truly drop in with no drilling? Was it worth it?
