Well...after wrestling with my Jazz Bass (American active Jazz deluxe) for the past 2 yrs, I ve determined that the active electronics was NOT the problem. I had replaced the active last year after having my "G" and "D" strings fading in volume repeatedly. I assumed at first that it was the back pick up because it only did this when the fader pod was leaned toward the back pick up. I had tried a different pick up, but realized later that it was a different design that wasn t "split" on the poles like the original pup.
Anyway, I put the original pup back in and replaced the active electronics and everything was great for a few months. Now the problem is back, so I took out the active all together and ran it as a stock jazz bass passive style. No change...so now I have to assume that the back pick up was faulty all along...but for some reason it "decided" to work for a few months. Anyone out there ever have this happen??????
Thanks...

Wait, by "back" pickup do you mean the split coil p pickup? I mean, it would make sense that the D and G would die on a split coil design, since the D and G have their own coil.

I'm honestly unsure of a good explanation, though I do think it's something with that specific coil. Faulty wiring would explain the lack of output and it's brief moment of working again, since a little jumbling of a faulty wire can make it work for a little time.

The problem with this theory is that the two coils of a p pickup are wired in series, so the output of one pickup should have a detrimental effect on the output of the other.

Start by checking the wire connections between the two pickups, but even so... it's strange.
