I have a 2006 Highway One Jazz Bass with D'Addario medium gage flatwounds and ran into an issue at my last gig. We were playing outdoors with the temperature being about 95F and humidity to match. My strings (and fingers) felt like they had glue on them they were so sticky. Normally the strings are smooth as silk. Anybody have a cure (short of only playing indoors)? Thanks!

Flat wound strings would help, but drastically change your tone. Maybe spray on some Finger-Ease? I still question whether or not that's good for the wood tho. Does anyone else know if it has negative effects?

I've used Finger Ease for a long time with maple and rosewood necks, never had a problem.

Lately, I just wash my hands thoroughly, that seems to do the trick and, keep your hands off of your face.

Thanks for the responses. I normally keep my hands clean, but it was hard to keep them dry with humidity. Maybe I'll give finger-ease a shot. I was wondering... do roundwound strings have similar issues in an outdoor environment?

wow i'm stupid. just noticed you already use flatwounds. and there i was talking about them as possibility.... :? anyway, in my experience, anything that causes your digits to stick to flatwounds will be worse using roundwounds. Elixir strings seem not to have this issue as much but they are ridiculously priced for bass.

when youre on the stage, keep a small towel near you so after every song you can dry off your hands and maybe even rub down the strings a bit. i think this is the simplest solution there is, and it works for me! :D

Yep. I do the same thing. My only guess is that it was so humid it didn't do any good.

Yep! I live in Florida and have been doing allot of outdoor shows this summer. And I use roundwounds. I too use the Finger Ease on those humid gigs where I stick to the strings. It does not eliminate the problem, but it does help.

I sometimes use denatured alcohol wipes to clean my strings. I have found that, when I do this, it often dries my fingers out. So when my fingers don't feel clean or dry, I reach for those alcohol wipes and wipe my fingers. The alcohol evaporates very quickly and leaves dry, clean fingers. It works for me.
