Hello everyone. This is my first post here on the Fender forum. I've searched and haven't found anyone talking specifically about this particular issue.

The axe - 2001 Fender Standard Jazz Bass (modified a good bit over eight years)

The issue - I just got finished defretting it last week. That came off without a hitch and it's looking pretty darned incredible, if I do say so myself. The last coat of clear is drying at the moment. Is there a particular way I need to go about setting the truss rod and bridge, or do i have to play it by ear? It may help to point out that since the day it arrived from the factory and I picked it up, I have never adjusted the truss rod because it has always felt really nice so I just left it alone.

Also, the next and final modification to this bass is a BadassII. I am assuming since it is a direct replacement that the saddles are pretty comparable in their adjustment ranges. Am I correct in that assumption?

Thanks in advance for input, and as soon as the urethane cures and I bolt this lady back together I will be posting pics of the defret for anyone who may benefit from it.

OR should I just use the same measurements as in the Fender Owner's Manual and just measure from string to 8th fretline in the wood instead of string to 8th fret?

Welcome to the Forums Delta66!! I don't have the answer, but the ones with the knowledge here are BrotherDave and CAFeathers (Chet) for sure, and of course some others but those 2 are the most knowledgeable and always posting. Chet is all over the board, he's mainly a guitar player, but has a bass that he restored - MIM. Hope that helps. G'luck with finding out the answer :)

On my fretless basses I just try to get the neck as flat/ no relief as I can, and lower the strings as much as I can. The Mwah Jaco sound comes the light buzz you get from super low strings. You just don't want to lose sustain though. I personally like lighter gauge strings too.

you sound pretty knowledgeable hypersloth. so what do you think is best if i want it to be the opposite of that? i love jaco's stuff, but i like flatwounds and i want very little mwah in my tone. my bass has always hinted at an upright sound, which is why i defretted it. how would you set it up for that? also i use fender 9050M strings. thinking of switching to d'addario xl chromes...thoughts?
