i have an MIM jazz bass. at the moment it seems that if i adjust the truss to the fender-recommended level, a week or two later its back again to a ridiculously high amount.

could this be a problem with string gauge? i've used on this d'addario steel 110 and fender flats 105. could it be that jazz basses are just not meant to handle that kind of tension. what string sets are recommended? i know some people recommend different 'ideal' gauges for guitar sometimes.
or is the neck or truss just bad? it does seem very 'loose'

which is slightly annoying, i get the higher sets, because on the lower sets the E is too floppy, but then the rest is too taught on the higher sets. i may have to get a custom gauge 110-40 or something ridiculous.

the other unrelated problem i have, is i think at the factory the neck pickup was very misalligned. its right against the side of the cavity, and i have to shift the E saddle right to the edge of the bridge for it to be in range(and it wants to shift back too). is this changeable in any way at all?

If you adjust a truss rod and then in two weeks the problem returns either the rod nut is moving, the bass is drying out dramatically or the rod is somehow broken, but if that were the case the neck would never adjust in the first place.
Are you sure that the neck is attached tightly?

Whenever a setup changes on a bass or guitar- It means that something has moved.

If heavy strings are the problem- you should see the problem from day one, usually.

It may be time to take your bass to a good guitar repair shop.

the neck is attached tightly, but i have had a few problems with that, as it was too tight. Had to get a new neck plate and screws as they wore through the plate! i took a shim out which improved the angle IMO, but may have been there for this beck problem.
(in other words i've got a faulty bass)

I noticed it when i changed the stock strings, whatever they are, to 110 daddario prosteels. now got fender 105 flats on it.
i would have thought a bass could take any string guage really, but both of those have a higher tension top so i'll try a more balanced set.
does anyone know what strings are stock? i'm guessing 100s but could be wrong.

also, which brand of strings are those which lower the action? i think i'm talking about those that have the unwound part that extends past the saddle, i know i heard you can get strings to allow for higher saddles.

failing that i'll get the local shop to check out the truss rod.

You said earlier that the rod is "loose". That is not a good sign. YOu may have a broken truss rod, which means the neck will bow no matter what strings you put on. You can try a light guage set to lessen the neck bow but it will always be there until your replace the neck.
Replacing the neck of a MIM bass is not really cost effective b/c it costs more that the value of another used MIM Fender bass, usually.

You may be able to find another bass for less than the cost of a replacement neck, or you may find a used neck that will work for the right price.

I hate to say it but you may have been taken by whoever sold you the bass. I hope that you didn't pay too much for it.

Good luck
