so i got a fender jazz bass that i got from a family friend about 3 years ago, according to the serial number its a '78 or '79. i currently still have all the original parts on it except for the thumbrest and the pickup covers. its in sunburst color. ive been thinking about refinishing it for a while now, but kinda worried about it possibly really diminishing the value of the guitar. its definately not a collectors piece for me, just a daily player. would it be a good idea to go ahead with it? i plan on doing it mostly myself (stripping, painting, etc) just the lacquer that im stuck on. im fine on my own with woodworking so no worries there. any thoughts? and heres some pictures of the guitar-

It will seriously lower the resale value: that's just the nature of refinishing an instrument. That being said, it doesn't mean you shouldn't. After all, it is your bass.

I think it looks really cool like that. something about the way the area that was under the guard fades into the surrounding area.

My vote is to leave it alone. The bass is a legitimate beauty with all of the marks of a well played, but not abused bass.

The irony here is that there are Fender refinishers all over the globe trying to duplicate the wear that your bass already has and they charge a high price for their craft.

If you refinish:
You will devalue your bass by 50% if not more. Your bass is 31 years old and it is a collector's item. You will never be able to undo a refinish.

If you really want a new look for your bass , buy a Warmouth or other make Jazz body and finish that the color you want and leave your original body alone. That way you can return to the original when you tire of the refinish. I will guarantee you that if you refinish, you will regret it.

Of course it is your call as to what you do. I just want you to have the facts before proceeding.
