Hi Guys, any one out there suggest what strings I should start out with, haven't had the chance to play my MIJ Jazz bass yet since buying it but looks like it could do with new strings as the red winding is coming undone on the old ones that are fitted. Anyone recommend a decent 'ish starter bass amp to get me going as I only have Marshall & Fender electric guitar amps and I've been told they they may not be upto the demands of a Bass guitar? Cheers, JV

Honestly it would depend on the kind of music that you play slapping or finger or pick but i think an all-around good string would be the Ernie Ball Hybrid bass strings or just the plain super slinky bass strings and honestly it doesn't make a difference whether your starting off or experienced that wouldn't influence the kind of string choice that you would make its just what you think sounds good so threads like this are a good idea and then after you get positive feedback from about 4 different kinds of strings that are liked the most you should make a poll :)

I like the Ken Smith RMML5 strings. They are stainless, intonate well on the 5th string as well as all others and last longer than other strings mentioned here. They also have a good slap sound and all around jam for all other sounds desired. I have used other commonly known strings that do not intonate worth anything on the B string... very frustrating and always go back to these. Bassemporium.com has good prices. I don't work for them. They sell other strings, too. I have been using those strings for over ten years and have not found anything that compares. These are just opinions and your may vary. I do play a 5 string so you have to get the 4 or 6 string version based on what you play. There are other Ken Smith strings also you can look at that are heavier but not as effective at slapping.

Like they said it depends on what you want to play. I have 1 Bass Stringed Up with GHS Boomers, and the other 1 I have Strung Up with the Steve Harris Signature Strings. But I will end up trying something else as I find them to be a little bit Un-Comfortable to play. As far as beginners amps, you don't have to pay much. Just get a small Ampeg or Fender. Both have good quality.

I forgot to add that the Ken Smith strings sound fantastic for all kinds of music. I play all styles from contemp, funk to jazz.
