I have been checking out different pickups as i am planning on replacing the stock ones on my MIM jazz bass, and i had one question:

are the pickups in this picture:

the ones that come on MIA jazz basses, or are they the ones on MIM basses????

No, those are VERY different than the stock MIM pickups, and are an excellent choice. They're basically a 62 jazz reissue pickup. If you have a local guitar store, you can see if they have a 62 jazz reissue, or a geddy lee, because they use the same pickups (though the geddy lee has a different bridge pickup position).

These are the standard for when people say "vintage tone." However, don't be fooled: vintage tone doesn't mean bassy and warm. People in the 60's mainly used roundwound strings and big warm tube amps. But the reality is the 60's pickups were VERY agressive.

It's important to look around for a lot of pickups. These pickups have a tamer high end and a rounder bass. But the most important part of a pickup in my mind is midrange.

In my experience, comparing these pickups to MIA pickups (modern style) the vintage are more high mid oriented whereas the modern pickups are more low mid oriented. High mid gives you the classic "growl," whereas low mid gives you more grind.

Personally I love the low mid grind of modern pickups and the high mid growl of vintage pickups. Solution? These pickups.

They are OVERWOUND vintage pickups. What does that mean? You get more low end and midrange (people say you don't have enough high end, but I disagree). I happen to LOVE the huge agressive midrange you get in them, and it has BOTH the low mid AND the high mid. In my mind, it's the best of both worlds. Once I get the money I'm throwing them on my 2008 MIA bass.

Another alternative is these Seymour Duncan pickups:

It's basically the same idea: overwind vintage pickups. I haven't tried them, but they should be similar in theory.[/i]

wow, thanks for the advice :D

i mainly use a "Flea-like" style of playing and tone. What i will do will be to go to my local guitar shop and ask them if i can try out one of the 62' reissue jazz bass.

In My opinion if i were you i would rip the MiM pickups out of there and put in some fedner SCN (Samarium Cobalt Noiseless) pickups off the guitarcenter.com website or something thats what i did with my MiM jazz as well as replaced the bridge with a Badass II bass bridge really pumped the sound up and i also being a flea fan could make my bass sound more like his :)

Check out Dimarzio Model J p/u's. They're 'high output' and humbucking as well...

Does Fender Vintage Pickup fit directly in the MIM cavity? I've heard custom 60's are slightly bigger..
