Why are the volume controls on the new American Standard Jazz Bass the audio taper kind? You know... the kind that has very little volume change from 1 to 7 and then... WAM! ... big change from 8 to 10? Why not linear pots ?

Also, I noticed that the tone control does it's job but you have to be either all the way one way or the other to get any significant tone change. Also, when you go all the way bright the bass seems to get louder.

Anyone else with a new American Standard notice that? I can deal with it but I just wanted to know why Fender would do that when linear pots are available. Thanks

There's no easy answer to your question, the good news is, it isn't too costly or difficult to swap out the existing pots. I guess if you spend $1000+ on a guitar, you really shouldn't have to bother with those things though.

I have an american standard jazz bass, and I'd say these are things that effect all jazz basses, not just the american standards.

First of all, all tone controls add volume as you turn the tone up. Tone controls are simply low pass filters that cut the high frequencies, therefore when the tone is down, all of the selected frequency is cut, and you have less volume. Conversely, when the tone is all the way up very little is cut (though some) and you have a volume boost.

If you're not satisfied by the different tones you can get with the tone control, then you can always change the tone cap. If you need help with that, id be willing to assist.

As for the volume pots, it's pretty standard in the industry to have audio pots for everything, and I've found its quite rare to have linear pots for volume controls. It's worth trying the linear pots to see if it helps the volume issue.

Powerjazzbass long time no see im still lookin' for a good power jazz myself on ebay although im happy with my new Fender hot rod jazz that thumps like a beast as for the tone pots this is VERY uncommon with american made fender instruments but possibly try testing the output levels with a local guitar tech sometimes things can interfere with the output such as a semi-loose wire (this happened to me once) and maybe that will work or maybe it wont but give it a try :)

Yeah, that would be understandable in a $300 Squier! Imagine buying a car and having to replace things right away. I guess that happens too, doesn't it!

Exactly... I was just checking out a $1600 Fender 52' tele hot rod and it looked to me like it needed a new nut. The finish from the factory just isn't the same as it was even 10 years ago.
