I recently came across 2 glorious playing 1998 Jazz basses. I have some '60's Jazz basses that have been with me for quite a while and not really up on current Fender reissues/new models. The ones I have are first and foremost great players (feel & sound great to me with no dead spots and evenly balanced etc). I was at a friends house and picked up his son's bass and after playing it for 15 minutes and really enjoying it, I started looking it over and wondering what it was all about. He mentioned he bought it new in 1998 and I noticed it had the Made in Mexico logo. Frankly speaking this surprised me because I was not aware Fender was producing there (I knew about Fender Japan because I work and live there half the time anyway since the '80's). This instrument sounded good, balanced well and had all the qualities I ask for in a bass and I have been playing for a while and road tested a few over the last 45 years so to speak. He mentioned to me that when he bought it back in '98 the clerk told him that it was Made in Mexico but the pick ups and tuners were in fact American. The other day I was in a local music store & checked out a few Fender Jazz and just see what was up. The 2 that played and sounded the best were a 1998 and a 2009. Both MIM's. This was out of 20 different Fenders!

Refreshing post from an objective viewpoint! WELCOME to the forum!

As good as the MIM stuff was in 98, I think they have actually never been better than right now. The finishes especially have come a long way since the early years at Ensenada.

When you find one you really like it doesn't matter to me where it ws made. I think the MIA Standard/Deluxe necks are superior still though. Just my opinion and your mileage may vary on that.

Agreed, the MIM finishes seem to be reflecting the thin satin urethan finishes that are so fantastic on the American Standards. I do have to say that if you were to dress a MIM bass in MIA hardware and electronics, I would still take the MIA bass any day. So much is personal preference, but I find the MIA a fantastic platform that goes far beyond the hardware and electronics it's dressed in.
