Used to use DR nickel Lo-Riders. Recently switched to DR Hi-Beams (40-100). I love them. Powerful bottom and very focused tone. I like the rough string feel.

I've used all kinds of bass strings. When it comes to roundwounds, DR is the way to go.

[quote="PaducahLuke"]All three of my Fender® Basses are fitted with GHS flatwounds. It is because my playing style is a bit different from most bassists - due to a left arm injury at age 9, I do not have precision use of the third and fourth fingers on my left hand. Due to the higher than normal speed that I have to use to change finger positions, using anything but flatwounds in my particular case, produces a finger drag noise. The flatwounds do not produce that irritating noise. Flatwounds also work well for special effects and sliding up or down one octave without drag noise - especially on the "E" string.

I have a similar problem because I have small hands for a bass player and I have to do a lot of sliding. I use Fender Super 7250ML, which sound great but for the really excessive scratching. I have two questions. As my fingers won't be growing much, is my only real option to use flatwounds (I have flats on another copycat bass) and will that just kill the sound of my Jazz so it sounds like mush?
Should I look specifically for a steel flatwound to get maximum brightness (as I can always dial it down, but ya can't always dial it up)
Thanks

I don't know if flat wounds are such a bad thing. I haven't used them in years but I know J Bass players who swear by them, loving the vintage sound they give. They used to make 1/2 wound strings, not sure if they still do, feels like a flat but sounds like a round if that makes sense. Supposed to be easier on the fingers and the fretboard.

Just do what feels and sounds best to you. If you're happy with you sound and they're comfortable for you go with what feels right. I've been thinking about trying out some flats myself. Good luck whatever you decide.

I've got a 2006 Highway One Jazz Bass with CS 60s PUPs and a tone circuit that's been revised to Jaco's bass of doom specs (uses a 0.47 ufd orange drop cap). I just love that fat, thumpy, old school tone I get from Fender 9050 flatwounds. They're as smooth as silk and the tone lasts.

Thomastik-Infeld Flatwounds. Smooth as butter. When I was at a Rock Camp last summer I bought my Jazz bass with the flats over and pretty much everyone loved the look, feel, and sound so much it began the main performence bass for the camp. The other was an Ibanez that was in drop-D. But I tell ya, those Thomastik people sure know how to make a booming bottom end.

However I was recently thinking of stringing some Rotosound SwingBass or JazzBass Flats on my bass for a slight change. I was really surprised to hear Queen, Pink Floyd an Oasis using Rotosound flats. Main Point: Flatwound Strings + Jazz Bass = A Whole Lotta $@!!
