Hello. I am new to this forum. I picked up a 66' Jazz from a friend of mine. It had horrible old flatwounds on it. I didnt like the bass at first and was going to dump it, but tried new strings on it first. Wow, what a difference it made. I love this bass, but forgot what strings I used. Could have been DR's (not sure which ones). So my question is.....would you go with DR's? I play mostly rock. I prefer a real deep fat sustaining low end and that Fender mid range tone. I run it straight to an amp without any effects or pods/stomp boxes or eq devises. Do you guys recommend adding anything to this? Thanks in advance! :D

Sounds like you need flats. If you like DR strings, try DR Hi-Beam flatwound strings. Very thumpy, old school but still lots of flex. Moreso than LaBella strings which are tighter. Or you may want ultimate flex -- TI flats.

I have been experimenting with my set-up (Marcus Miller4 string) and strings. I am currenly using Steve Harris flats and the results are interesting for me: not too much fun slapping but a nice pocket sound that I am beta testing.
I do have a question: have any of my fellow J-Bassers with a MM had any issues with the nut? I had the tech at Guitar Center tell me that the nut may give me grief because of the width of the SH strings (he said the strings may slide out of the nut). Any replacement nut ideas?

I'd think Harris flats on a Jazz might be too much for the neck. Those are heavy flats!

Boomers are cool without a doubt. I just started using the rotosound swings. The first time I put them on I was not happy the first day. They were gripping my fingers too much. After a couple of days either my fingers got used to them or the strings wore in. Depending on how long they last I really like these a lot so far.

D'Addario nickle wound EXL170 Long Scale 45-100. With SD Hot Jazz Stack pickups, TBX tone control, and 2 500k volume pots, I get a variety of great tones.

I'm wondering what experiences strictly fretless players have had with coated strings. I have an AmDlx 5 fretless and so far have used the stock Fenders, Boomers, and currently DRs. All good strings but I am noticing a little fingerboard scratching which is to be expected with roundwounds. I am primarily a jazz and pit musician so I'm looking for something that offers a full range of sound.

So let me hear which coated strings we fretless players are using.

For me, Dean Markley Blue Steels(roundwounds). IMO great, long lasting tone.

Fender 8250 taperwound is the stock string on the American Jazz. I've been using them with no issues. Good reliability, great sound, good quality and relatively inexpensive ($16.99 is pretty reasonable).
