Bought my J-bass and been playing it with the stock strings but they need to go. What recommendations do you have for type of strings? I play in a semi-active rock/pop band with about a show everyweek or two weeks. I need something that will be fairly durable when playing and won't go bad too quickly.

I love DR strings. I use Hi-beams, which are very very bright. However, if you're into a warmer sound, you might want to look at sunbeams.

All DR strings last for a VERY long time, and you can get them coated to last even longer.

Also, for steel strings, highbeams feel fantastic. They feel like nickels, and have a very low tension.

Also, DR's are pretty cheap if you know where to look. Highbeams are around 25 bucks.

I've been using GHS Boomers on my Geddy Lee for years. They are bright and Last! I play every day @ 1 1/2 to 2 hrs. I only have to change them every 4 mths on average.

Well, I've had slightly different experiences with GS boomers. I don't know if it's the way I play or something, and different people have different experiences with strings, but every time I got them they went dead in a week (or at least lost their zing, which some people like) and don't last as long as some others (though longer than stock fender strings).

However, GS Boomers have an issue with their E string breaking. Every set I've gotten has lost the E string after about 4-6 months, sometimes earlier, and I've heard of other people having this issue. The problem is that one of the wires that holds the string together, not the core or the outside wires, breaks quite easily, and when it goes, the whole string unwinds.

I'm not trying to hate on GS Boomers, a lot of people like them, but me and others have had issues with them.

I use Fender 7350M, .45 - .105 on the 4strings, I like the sound of Stainless Steel :) DR Black Beauties on the 5er. The Black Beauties last a long time, longer than the coating itself. Most DR strings last long tho - in my experience.

The key is try as much as you can, it takes awhile to find the one you like. Good luck and have fun!!

All three of my Fender® Basses are fitted with GHS flatwounds. It is because my playing style is a bit different from most bassists - due to a left arm injury at age 9, I do not have precision use of the third and fourth fingers on my left hand. Due to the higher than normal speed that I have to use to change finger positions, using anything but flatwounds in my particular case, produces a finger drag noise. The flatwounds do not produce that irritating noise. Flatwounds also work well for special effects and sliding up or down one octave without drag noise - especially on the "E" string.

One of my instructors once remarked at my finger speed on the left hand -

"I'm sure that you could play the 'Minute Waltz" in 57 seconds."

Alright thanks guys. Got some good ideas of where to start looking. I'll be in the studio soon and thought a fresh set of strings will really make it sound better.

When I had my 60's Classic Jazz, I put DR Nickel Lo-Riders on it. Similar tone to the Sunbeams, but higher tension, which fits my abusive technique.

Another set that I have found to be very good is the Fender 7250, the set with the red silk windings. I felt they lasted a pretty long time and sounded very good.

FWIW, the GHS Boomers I tried died quickly, too.

I use Rotosound SwingBass medium gauge with my MIM Jazz. I like them because they are what Geddy Lee uses, and I like his sound.

They don't cost too much either. (About GBP 20)

Despite loving the way they sound, I've had them break on me as well. Right now I have DR Black Beauties, but used EB Power Slinkys for about a year. I love the .110 E string. My band was tuned a 1/2 step down as our standard tuning, so the strings were a bit more taut. The DR bb's aren't exactly my favorites....the appearance is cool, but the sound is a bit too bright for my tatse. They'd be a slappers dream.

I'm not much of a slapper, but I've heard folks get a great tone and response from DR strings....Hi Beems I believe.

Try various brands out, it can get somewhat costly but that's the only way to really find out which kind you might like...It's all trial and error. I use Elixir...45-105

I like the stock strings on my 2001 American Series Jazz. Tried some others but came back to the Fender 8250 w/taperwound E. They work best for me, but everybody else is right, it's what works for you that counts..
