Fender Jazz question....I recently re-finished a 60's or early 70's Jass Body. When I stripped the primer grey off I noticed four screw holes that were off center and about a quarter inch behind the rear pick-up.

I figured it was an after market thing that someone had installed at some point until watching David Gilmour's Bass player on TV yesterday. He had the exact same off center holes on his old Jazz Bass.

Does anyone have a clue to what these holes may have been for?? I'm not talking about the bridge cover holes either, they are to the side of the bridge.

You have a very early 60's Jazz body, because those are the holes left by the string mutes that were installed on 1960-62 Jazz basses.
The early Jazz basses had four felt mutes that were mounted under the strings on flat spring steel. The body holes you have were where they were screwed into the body. The reason for the large bridge cover used on Jazz basses is to cover these up.

If you google some early Jazz bass images, you will clearly see how these mutes were mounted.

I would like to see your bass when you get finished or before. Any pictures are welcome.
