Hi Guys, new here so bear with me. Thought I'd try my hand at playing bass after a couple of years playing Strats :? and Les Pauls  Managed to get hold of a great condidion '89 MIJ Jazz Bass, does anyone know how I can tell if its a re-issue model or a standard Jazz Bass. Its a black body with a 3 ply redish tortoiseshell type plate. Are these MIJ decent basses to get started with? Anyone know the approx value of these so I know I didnt get ripped off by not knowing anything about basses before taking the plunge. Cheers, JV

Personally, value wise, not much for the MIJ, some rate it high because the love the MIJ's...I like 'em, play with one as my main bass...great quality these MIJ. I've not have any issues, original owner. I have replaced the stock actives on it to EMG's and put a BadAss bridge.

MIJ Jazz basses and Japanese made Fenders in general are very good instruments. The only issues you may have is the quality of the pickups and controls which can be easily upgraded if you wish.
I think the stock MIJ instruments are great to use as is, esp. for a beginner.

The bass is probably a reissue of some sort althought the Japan instruments always do their own variation on the reissue theme.
The way to tell if your Jazz is a reisssue is if the ground is an exposed strip between the bridge and the bridge pickup.

Nice one, thanks for the info. It does have the exposed strip so looks like it could be a re-issue of some sort. Decided to eat, sleep and have kids before touching an instrument of any type, bit of an early mid-life crisis sort of thing. JV

In regards to modding your bass, everyone that's been here awhile knows how I feel, it's a bass bought to be played. So if I mod it, I don't care, it's not like I can put it back to stock. I've modded MIA, MIM, MIJ, basses that I have, always give the person I sold the bass to the original parts.
