Thanks. In keeping with what you said elsewhere, about overwound pickups, what replacement pickups are you familiar with that give a more 70's tone? I've looked at Aguilar, Duncan and EMG vintage style offerings so far.

Thank you for the excellent post on capacitors, brotherdave!I have been surprised that tech shops who always upgrade to CTS pots don't give capacitors similar attention. I will have to try to test some out in the manner you suggested, but since I rarely open the tone controls all the way, I might experiment with raising the value slightly.

One little nitpick, though. In your original post, you wrote:

.01 uf: This is the cap found in vintage 62 P basses. It will roll off a LOT of highs and give you a very boomy tone. I would NOT use any value above this.

If I follow the logic and pattern of the post correctly, my guess is you meant to write .10 uf (or 0.1 uf) instead of .01 uf, which would actually be less than the .22 uf that you recommended as the lower limit. I am sorry if I am mistaken here.

Thanks again for clarifying a somewhat mysterious but unfairly overlooked modification, which as you clearly state, is likely to be the least inexpensive mod you can do, yet may have a tremendously audible effect. Bang for your buck, indeed!

Correct, 0.1uf is the max used by fender followed by .047uf (my favorite). The only bass I liked the 0.1uf in was a 51 RI Telebass single coil single pickup. .022uf typical on guitars along with .033uf. Some like .068uf on a bass.
Many will tell you material doesn't matter but I have typically found polyester to be my favorite. Also, you do not need more than a 2volt cap but those are not made. 50volt are about the lowest nonpolar caps I have seen. Do not use electrolytic. BTW: I have found (along with others) the inexpensive green chicklet style 50volt .047uf caps from Radio Shack work nicely. My problem with Orange drop has been their size (usually 100volt-600volt) which results in larger size. They are good caps though. I also like Malory 150's (small tubular yellow caps) too.
https://www.radioshack.com/products/radioshack-0-047uf-50v-10-pc-mount-capacitor?variant=5717330437 . They have them in .022uf and 0.1uf also.
