Hi, I have 2002 MIM Jazz whose tone I am in love with. I has a meatier tone than usual mex basses. Have the Mex bases ever been issued with US pups?

I put an S1 switch in this bass and it rocks, big and fat... I used a toggle switch too, which means when I'm just on the bridge pick up it works as a kill switch for some high gain fun... like Bootsy and Buckethead in one go!

The only peculiar thing is when I slap, due to my technique my knuckles rub against the pick guard sometimes. This produces a static noise - like a polyester shirt coming out of the dryer. It does this on both pups, at full (hum cancelling) or on either pup on its own.... any ideas what this is??

Chances are it's a grounding issue. First, make sure there's no ground loops in the circuitry. If you post a pic of your bass's innards I might be able to see if you have a grounding issue.

Grounding is all good with solid (and fresh) connections to bridge, and common across the pots. Its not that much of an issue... but i can walk into stores and make basses do the static sound by rubbing the pick-guard fast. It isn't really an issue but an oddity i can make happen on call! I do suspect it is a sheilding issue, my next step is to shield the pickups and put some foil under the guard.

Anyone know about American pups issued in mex basses?

If it's a 2002 model, then I highly doubt it. I checked the parts list for the MIM basses from that year and it has the normal mexi pickups, unless fender's database isn't comprehensive.

Did you get the bass new or used? It's possible someone swapped the pickups and didn't tell the person they sold to. One way to check is to measure out the bridge pickup length. As I recall, mexi jazz pickups are the same size, whereas the bridge pickups on MIA basses are slightly longer.

I bought it new, in 2006. 2002 being the s/n date.

It has the same size pick-ups as the MIA basses, I think 2001 or 2002 they changed the mex pups from the old same size non-reverse wound. I have a 2000 model fretless jazz that had the old ones, which I swapped out for a set of SCN's. I put noiseless vintage in the 02 model but they weren't near as big (in sound that is - physically the same size!) as the originals, so I took them back out.

Thanks for your help. I'll post some pics when I get a chance to Crack the old girl open.

Well, the Vintage Noiseless lack UMFH. THOUGH, the vintage 62's sound very punchy and powerful, and if you're looking for a big sound, the Custom Shop Overwound 60's are fantastic.

I really can't explain why you're PUPs sound so good. I have a 2008 Am. Standard, and it's stock pickups are pretty meh. Trying to get the money to buy the Overwound 60's.

If you send a pic, I'll see if there's any wiring issues, though it does sound like it's probably a shielding issue. Either that or you're cursed.

Some people are actually more electrically charged than others! Some are way more charged such as a friend, now moved away, who could only wear mechanical watches because any watch with a battery would stop working in about 2 weeks.

Maybe something like that is going on in this case.

It certainly would not hurt to copper shield and star ground the bass as mentioned. Don't forget the control cavity too. Be sure to run ground wires from the pickup shielding tape in each pickup cavity to the control cavity and solder it to the lining of the cavity and then to ground.

Shielding is one of those things that costs very little money but can make a lot of difference, especially on single coil instruments like Jazzes.
