i have a fender jazz bass ive had for several years, and the frets are extremely rattley. ive tried adjusting the truss rod, and the action of the bridge, i can raise the strings up enough so that they dont rattle alot, but then its very hard to play. am i screwed haha...i read something about maybe having high frets, and that might require a luthier to fix....

Every bass needs adjustment as seasons change. Just the differences in humidity between Winter and Summer will make your bass neck bow either forward or backwards.

I don't know if your bass could benefit from a visit to a good repair shop, but I bet that it wouldn't hurt.

Have a good repairman look at the neck and check for a high fret or excessive wear.
Some times a neck just needs to be shimmed to get the action right and truss rod adjustment is a fine art but it makes a world of difference.

Good luck

Welcome to the forum Mr. Batman!

A really good tech will make it play BETTER than new.

I don't know where you live, but if it is in the USA, go to the craigslist.org sub web for your city or area and then go to the MUSICIANS community and make a post asking for the name, address and phone of the "best bass tech in this town." You'll probably get a few leads that way.

At the most you need truss rod and intonation adjustments and a fret dressing. This is mainly due to the reasons BC Bassman mentioned, weather changes.

I have been setting up basses for 41 years, but there is a guy I know who is way younger than me and I let him do my setups because he works magic! So, some people are just more talented, experienced or both at it and that is who you should seek out.

A GOOD sign is that he is so backed up it will take a several days or even a week before he can get to it. Good techs stay really busy. Also at this time of year as the weather warms up in the northern hemisphere...basses may need a tweak or two.

I'd probably plan on a new set of strings too as the labor cost is usually the same. It will be worth it to get this bass playing right again. If you are worried about cost, ask for the rate for a setup and ask how much extra for a fret dressing before turning over your J-bass to them.

Some basses are way more sensitive to seasonal changes than others. I don't know why that is, but suspect it has to do with the wood, the finish and the type of truss rod system used. I have one P-bass that hardly ever needs any changes and three other basses that seem to need tweaking everytime the wind changes direction.

Good luck!

Batman....just get someone to do a good setup....you could need a minor truss rod adjustment, and have to set your re-set your saddle height.

Check http://garywillis.com/pages/bass/bassma ... anual.html for suggestions on doing truss adjustments and setups.
