So, I got an Affinity jazz bass about a month ago for my birthday. I've been playing it without the amp, but as soon as I plugged the thing in, whenever I made contact with any metal piece, I'd get a decently loud pop. It went away after about a week, was fine for about a week and a half or two, and now it's back.

Again, I'll plug it in, turn the amp on, and I'm getting the standard humming noise, but whenever I go to touch a string or any other metal part, I get a popping noise. There isn't a popping noise as long as I'm making contact with the metal, but as soon as I stop, and then touch the metal again, it pops again. It's rather annoying and noticable when playing, especially open strings.

I've been searching forums and such, and the only thing that I've come across is, that the bass probably isn't properly grounded. Does anyone else have any differing opinions?

Sounds like a grounding problem, like you said. Can you return the bass to the store that it was bought at? 30 days? 45? 90?

Blah. I'm glad you can ignore your pops, ha, but, seriously if I'm strumming the open E string, the popping is just as loud as the actual sound, so it's not even a negligable problem. I took the thing up to the place where I got it, and I got some helpful hints.
-Found out it wasn't the guitar, based on his in-store playing.
-It could be the amp, the cable, or my outlet may not be grounded properly.
So, I bought a grounding implement. 69 cents at Home Depot. Nice and handy. Plugged that onto the end of the amp's electrical cable, and wouldn't you know, it stopped most of the popping. I even borrowed a friend's cable and it stopped almost 100%. Came back today and it was popping again, in full force. So I got the bright idea to switch electical sockets, and that totally worked. Let's pray it stays that way.

sounds like could be house wiring or even the city electrical power grid. I've got an affinity Jazz Bass and never experience that problem. If your still getting a bit of pop it could be the pickup heights, lowering them will prevent open strings hittimg them causing a pop

Always check the outlet that you are using for a proper ground.
You are playing with your life when you tolerate a badly grounded power outlet. Change outlets but remember to fix tha bad ground so it doesn't kill someone else.
