Hey everybody!

I wanna buy a Jazz bass so bad, but I don't know what to choose...

Is there a huge difference (talking about quality) between the JB made in Mexico, the JB Highway1 and the American JB ?

My budget is around 1000$ CAN...so what should I do?

bro, u cant go wrong with mexican made, i jsut bought a mim tele and it blows me and all my other guitars away, but hey, if u got the cash and wanna say u got a mia bass go ahead, obviously u have better quality, but if u go ahead and get the mexican u still got money left in your wallet for say...pickups, hardware, diferent style tuners, pikguards, a case maybe, all up to u, id go mexican if i was tryin to save a lil bank, but if u got reserves go ahead with the usa cant go wrong anyway

If your Born in the USA you should buy American! Buying a Fender American Bass can be an investment if you purchase the correct year and model. Do your homework and choose wisely. A bass made in Mexico will not go up in value if you had to sell it, "heaven forbid!" I have a Fender Custom Shop '64 Jazz Bass "Relic". I payed $1800.00 for it back in 2003. The price for the same bass is $3000.00 (This is not MSRP price which is higher) if you were to purchased it today, which is awesome on my part. It is worth investing your money, if you have $1000.00 you should be able to find a good American Fender bass to invest your money in. You need to do your homework and learn more about what you are purchasing, people are not always honest. I hope this encourages you!

Welcome to the Forum.

Best advice I can give you is to go try out as many as you can and find one that you really like.

I agree with Mr. Feathers...play them.

There can be great MIM basses and not so great MIM basses and awesome USA made basses and also there are USA basses that for whatever reason just aren't quite as good as others. What you are looking for is that "1 in a thousand" that is really special. You can play 10 basses of the same model and they all have some idiosyncrasy or another that the others don't have. There is no way to know for sure until you play and compare. I look for vibrations.

I think it has to do with the wood as much anything else. Upgrades are totally unnecessary on a new bass if you buy one you like in the first place.

What is the point of buying a MIM to save 500 dollars and then turn around and spend $450 on deluxe tuners, American Standard pickups, upgraded electronics, better bridge, new Fender hard case...when all that comes standard on an American Standard including the case?

Once you have your MIM upgraded to USA standards you'll have about as much invested in it as a USA bass yet the resale or trade in value won't improve much, if any at all.

thats not necesarily true, ive calculated that i could have my MIM jazz bass done up to american standards (tuner, pickups, bridge, tuning heads, wiring, etc) for just over £200 wjhich considering that my jazz bass cost me £350 it only adds up to £550, and MIA basses in the UK will set you back over £800. :D

See if you can buy a used American Jazz bass....especially one of the newer models/ with new features.

I've played a couple of those Vintage vibe series Squiers, and man are they nice for $300. The one looks just like the one you posted a picture of.

Have you considered any MIJ basses? I own 2 Fender Jazz basses and a Precision.. all have japanese parts and I couldn't be more happy. I had problems in the past with MIM so I try to avoid that although the price is good. MIJ is priced between MIM and MIA.

I certainly have. The Japanese models are solid, well built, and more affordable. If I bought one it would have to be an older model though....and used!

Try all of them out but I prefer Made in America !...better bridge, graphite reinforcement in the neck, Hipshot Tuners, 'through body' stringing, hardshell case...you get what you pay for...

I would wait and buy American made. Keep the cash in your pocket and wait for the best deal to appear. I just paid $700 for a (brand new-used) 2007 American Standard Jazz, with the S-1 switching. This bass has never been played, it still had the plastic coating on the pickguard. Every bass is different, but the overall quality of the MIA is by far better. I agree that there is no reason to buy the cheaper MIM and then spend more money on the necessary upgrades. You'll be much happier in the long run if you just wait and buy the American model.
