For a bass in your price range check out the new Squier "classic vibe" series basses. They're Squiers but built to Fender specs and street price is about $350 for a very decent instrument.

Also look into the Squier Vintage Modified series. I have the '70's Jazz bass. Natural finish with black "inlays" on maple neck. Very nice for under $300. Not too sure of it's availability in the UK tho...

We are talking about 313 US dollars at teh 200 pound level. You can sometimes get a FENDER STANDARD P or J for that price USED on eBay. However since your a talking pounds that means you are in the UK which sort of limits your choices as international shipping gets pricey.

Put a free classified out advertising, "WANT TO BUY FENDER BASS for 200 POUNDS" and you might get lucky. I think 150 pounds might buy a Squier Affinity but you'd be better off to save up a little more money to get a better instrument like the two better Squier series already mentioned.

There are some other cheap but playable basses out there. Ibanez, Yamaha, Peavey, Dean, and others make cheap entry level basses.

Don't forget to allow a little for a gig bag, some spare/new strings, strap and then there is the matter of an amp and cables.

Good Luck!

If this is your first bass, I have the perfect suggestion, which is exactly what I have and it's really all you need as a beginner. I'm learning quick, and I have no musical abilities whatsoever.

-Get a bass pack,so you get the amp and the bass. Look out for a Squire Affinity Jazz Bass.

However, it might be best if you just make it clear that you want a 4 string bass (if you're a beginner), and that you want the ACTION to be low (mind you not so much that the strings are resting on the frets or hit the fretboard every time you pluck a string).

Hope you find the right bass for you!

If you get a halfway decent bass in the first place you'll be more likely to get past the beginner stage. The bass packs are strictly beginner stuff. You can can that TECHNICALLY you have a bass and amp. Sort of like you can say that a Yugo or a Geo Metro is technically a car.

Buy a good used Fender bass if you can afford one, buy a good used amp with a 12 to 15 inch single speaker or a pair of ten inch speakers that does 100 watts or more...and you are there! In the UK you should be able to get good deals on used amps by British lines like old Trace, Marshall & Ashdown combos while the comparable US brands will be higher. UK made models of those British amp lines are solid and well respected here in the USA.

On the instrument, if you have to go the Squier route then I'd look at the better Squiers like the VIBE and Vintage Modified series already recommended. BUT I'd still get a decent amp. Buying one better amp is in the long run a better idea than buying one tiny amp and then buying a second decent amp a few months later when you want to play with a drummer.

I got this bass here and it was a good buy:

I have the walnut satin one. I guess this is another plug for the squire jazz bass, but they are good basses for the money you pay.

I think you made a wise choice. I've played your model and own a 70's Vintage. just get it set up properly and I'm sure you'll love it. Might want to invest in some better strings.

Have fun!
