I got two issues. 1) static electricity seems to be built up in the pickguard. 2) getting noise when I come off the strings. Anyone have these issues and a fix?

I had the same problems. The fixes I used:

Static in Pickguard: Your not crazy. The intermittent scatchy sound is static that builds up then discharges when you rub the pick guard. You can temporarily fix it by rubbing a dryer sheet on the pickguard (its a little nessy). A permanent fix is to remove the pickguard, cover the side that faces the bass with copper or aluminum tape. Took me about 10 min to finish and no more static.

Noise off the strings: this is a little harder to diagnose. If you have made NO modifications, then your ground is not complete. I created this problem with the 70's Modified Jazz when I upgraded the pickups. I finally repaired it when I completely rewired the control harness, using a diagram found on Talkbass.com. More likely than not, you are experiencing any one of the following problems:

Your pickup volumes are not at the same level
You are to close to EM sources, such as fluorescent lights, tube TV, Computer monitors
You have a ground loop
The electrical outlets in your home are not properly grounded

The easiest way to determine if it is your bass that has the problem or something else, take your bass and plug into a different amp, at a different location. If the hum disappears, then its something else.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the info.. I will get on the pickgaurd issue first, then tackle the other. Going elsewhere first and plugin' in is where I'll start. Thanks again.
