it definiely is ash and a nice piece of it at that. I was being facetious saying it was Oak  ...I have a friend that made a bass out of oak once thinking that it would have tremendous sustain...needless to say, it was so heavy that it was almost unplayable, plus it had almost no tone...oak is definitely NOT a tone wood 8)

Ash is a very nice wood and your Jazz bass has a very nice looking body made out of multiple pieces of ash.
Ash is also used to make baseball bats, but it sounds great when used to make guitars and basses.

Ash has a very prominent grain, which is why Fender uses it on many of their natural finished instruments.

If you don't like the grain pattern of ash, then there is nothing that I can say, because that is your opinion.

If you want a less prominent wood grain on your bass, then buy a bass made of alder, like used on some sunburst Fenders and custom color basses.

Wood has many permiatations...Whether that grain is good for acoustic reasonance is a Q for a luthier... I think it looks fantastic..Unique i would say..Thats whats great about natural Jazzez, and basses in general, they are not all the same, because of the wood characteristics...Wood is what gives basses and guitars there personality..

Does it sound good??

1st of all it is a beautiful piece to say the least, and from what I can see the grain pattern looks alot like my 74 which was Northen Ash,and would make this piece a lot closer to Period of correctness than what the U.S. 75 RI is,which btw the U.S. 75 RI uses Southern Swamp Ash which gives the bass a more Boomier/Modern type bright tone, than more so than a true vintage tone, but anyway that's a damn nice piece
