If the serial number is on the neck plate, 401191 puts that bass in the early 70's if it is a USA made Fender.

PLease give us more details if you can.

Pictures are better.

401xxx serial puts it around 1973-ish.
But you can remove the neck, look at the undersides of the volume and tone pots, and look at the undersides of the pickups for date codes.

Visit the RESOURCE index page in my signature below in this forum post. Then click on INSTRUMENT HISTORIC DATA.

You'll find everything you need there to date your instrument.

You may download Brother Dave's Printable Fender Field Guide. This simple four page document can be printed and stuffed in your vehicle's glove compartment, dashboard or under the sun visor. Then when you find a bass somewhere you want to identify, you'll have the right tool with you. I'm giving it away free...but I'm considering charging for it in the future.

Mr. Torres was a longtime neck builder at Fender's Fullerton plant.

When I run this serial I also get:
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1973 - 1974
