First off this is my first post on one of these forums, so heya. Anyways here is my question.

I have been playing five string basses now for about 20 years. Some time in the 90's I started playing the Jazz Bass V. I went away from them for a while when I started playing one of those well known Japanese MFG basses, you know the one starting with an I.

I was happy until I played a J again, and then I went through withdraw for a long time till I went out and bought a few of them. Interestingly enough, I have three MIM Jazz V deluxe basses now. Strangely, two of them have a very "dark" tone with lots of lows and a scooped mid sound to it, and another one of mine is darn near perfect sounding. What depresses me though is I bought it used with a crack in the back that will most likely require me to get a new body for it.

I need help in figuring out which wood this is so I don't replace it with one of those "deader" sounding woods the other two have. I should also clarify that these are all late 90s early 2000's era basses from the S/Ns.

Thanks again for any help you all can give me.

As a side note, anyone ever try replacing the body on these MIM jazz V's with a mahogany or walnut body? If so how did it sound?

Unfortunately it's difficult to say what wood they may be due to the fact that it was right around this time that Fender started using Alder for some of their MIM guitars and basses. Before then I believe they were either Basswood or Poplar. If you contact Fender ( consumerrelations@fender.com )with the serial # of each bass, they should be able to tell you the exact specs. I have contacted them a number of times and they have always been able to tell me exactly what I was holding. As far as replacing the body. I've never been a bid fan of Mahogany basses in general, but Walnut sounds like it would be an interesting choice for these particular basses. Let us know how you make out.

Well besides the weight killing me, I have a 12 string and a 6 string bass both with Mahogany. So far I have found that the darker sound with a fresh set of strings tends to work really well for reproducing the more modern boutique sounding basses. Of course, I am also using active eq with barts on those basses with sweepable mids so that may be part of it too. If they only felt like home like a jazz. *sigh*

Its wierd for me though, I just have a thing for the "feel" of walnut. Always have, I am really tempted to have a luthier build me a walnut body just to see how it turns out. Anyone try this out here yet?

A friend of mine had a piece of walnut shaped for him to look sort of like an SG, but slightly more off-set, Jazz Bass style. If I remember correctly, it had a mahogany veneer top and back. He had me wire it up with two P-Bass pickups and a simple Volume/Tone/Toggle set-up. Finally I added a Warmoth Maple/Birdseye neck, painted the headstock to match the color of the mahogany top and finished it with some gold schaller hardware. I'm not a big fan of gold hardware, but it kind of worked with this one. The bass sounded great, but walnut can get a little heavy.
