I have a 66 jazz bass with matching (white) headstock. Is this rare?

I don't know if they're rare but you might check EBay and Craigslist over a period of time. If you rarely see them and the selling price is far above the average for a new one, they may be rare.

Not really all that rare. On Jazz basses colors came with matching headstocks starting in the late 60's. This continued into the 70's. The sunbursts and blondes had regular headstocks. I always liked matching headstocks.

Matching headstocks are something of a rarity on any of the Fender guitars & basses today though. Precisions never had matching headstocks back then either.

The Fender 70's Reissue Jazz would be a whole not more like a real early 70's Jazz if it had a matching headstock. You will sometimes see matching headstocks on FSR (Fender Special Run) series Fender guitars. My son has a 2006 Fiesta Red FSR Stratocaster with matching headstock and gold logo. It looks like a zillion bucks.

Never say never, Dave. I am old enough to remember trying out a Precision bass in 1969 with a matching headstock and I have seen several Jazz basses from that time in white, Lake Placid Blue and Candy Apple Red without matching headstocks.
It was an option to order a matching headstock or not with your custom color and you are right that usually Jazz basses had them, but it was never a certainty.

Hey 66Jazz,

Any 1966 Fender is a rare bass or guitar. You have a very special bass so don't think its not a rare one. Its just a matter of numbers. They made quite a few white Jazz basses back in 1966 but its anybody's guess how many actually survive to this day and how many are fakes.

If your is legitamate then guard it carefully but still enjoy playing it.
