50th Anniversary Jazz Basses.

Hi - newbie here to the Fender forums.

I've been offered a mint condition 50th Anniversary Jazz bass here in the UK.

What price were they new & what would you say the value now?

As I say it's mint, gold hardware, with hard case, tags etc.

It's a nice instrument in its own right, but it would be nice to know that they are collectable/desirable,

Thanks for any advice/observations.

There are two types of "50th Anniversary" basses.

First, every bass and guitar made in 1996 got a sticker on the reverse of the headstock. These are often touted as "50TH ANNIVERSARY" instruments. They are really not any different, more limited or more valuable than a 1995 or 1997 model of the same instrument. They just have the sticker.

Second, there were limited runs of the "official" 50th Anniversary Series of the following instruments. The total made in the series is in parentheses:

50th American Standard Stratocaster (2,500)
50th American Standard Stratocaster Left Handed (250)
50th American Standard Telecaster (1,250)
50th American Standard Precision Bass (500)
50th American Standard Jazz Bass (500)
50th American Standard Jazz Bass V String (500)

According to the Fender press release about them exclusive features on the instruments in the limited anniversary series included: gold plated American Standard hardware, (the basses had the lite deluxe tuners) highly figured maple veneer top and back, Antique Sunburst finish, vintage pickups and electronics, white plastic parts and a black tolex vintage case with orange plush interior and vintage Fender nameplate. In addition, each model is equipped with a specially engraved neck mounting plate with the Fender 50th Anniversary logo and limited edition serial numbering (i.e., 1 of 2,500).

Since you say the one you are considering has gold hardware it actually may be one of the limited edition MIA Jazzes. But you'd have to look at the neckplate. If it says it is "J___ of J500" then it is actually a limited edition bass.

Retail on the limited Jazz basses was $1800 US.

I've seen them bring $1000 to $1500 in used but excellent condition. Many are no doubt horded unplayed.

You can see one with a closeup of the engraved neckplate here: . http://www.classicacafe.com/Content/Fender_Jazz_Bass_50th_Anniversary_Ltd_Edition_1996_.asp

Hi Brotherdave,

Thanks for the information and the link to the pictures - I really appreciate the reply.
Since posting on the forum the guy has changed his mind about selling it THREE TIMES - he said he wouldn't sell, then he would sell then he wouldn't so at the moment I haven't bought it ( I wouldn't mind, but he wwas the one who asked ME if I was interested in buying it - I haven't tried to push him into a sale) so at the moment all I can do is look at the pctures you sent and play my MIJ 62 reissue ( which is a great instrument) - I was out gigging with it last night.

Thanks again,

all the best,
