1st of all let me say that this is a supperbly built Bass, and the playability and tone of this machine is supreme to just about anything that's out there IMO,HOWEVER,as far as it being an exact replica or "Period of correctness then I would have to beg the differ.
To start with the use of quatersawn or sugar maple was never used back in the 60's era basses it was Rock maple. Also the absence of the the strap button on the back of the neck, and the lack of darknes on the rosewood fingerboard is somewhat if-fy,not to mention the undercoating which was silver in 64 not Gold.
The decal is ok, it could be better. Now I know some may read this and say these are minor details, but details are what you're paying for and ALOT OF IT !!!
Are they great basses ? Absolutely, however Fender has advertise them as Exact Replicas and they're not and for a retail price over $3000.00 the last thing I want is a high dollar American Standard which has been socalled Relic !

Love mine and play it almost everynight. You're right about the details but it still in my opinion, plays better then what I've seen in other makes. I have some flame going on in my neck wood.

That is why I purchased the 62 Re Issue Jazz bass and installed the Custom Shop PUP's.I actually liked the neck much better than the 64 and for the difference in cost and the money saved I can now buy a Jaco CS. :)

About the pickups, My Jazz came with the vintage pickups installed. Please understand, this is my ears talking too me. The vintage pickups that came with the bass have some wicked gain (output). I have heard other pickups and used other ears, my keyboardist and me both swear these are wound hot. It's quite a noticeable rise in gain. It's a good thing......

What didn't you like about the pickups in the AV 62 reissue? I've got one and really like the tone, it's very warm to my ears.

I picked one of these up a few weeks ago on sale. I love this thing. The sunburst is gorgeous and the feel is amazing. It's a great instrument.

Does anyone know of the Closet Classic is discontinued?

Could be. The Custom Shop seems to be cutting back on options lately.

I did some research on maple wood, and this is what I found Hard rock maple and Sugar maple are the same thing! Am I missing something?

* Maple, though rarely employed for body itself, is used as a top. It is usually white in color, with tight pores and thin grain lines. Typically, there are two kinds of maple:
o Eastern Hard Maple, also known as "hard rock maple" or "sugar maple," is usually used for maple syrup, but can also be used as an excellent tonewood. As named, it is very hard and dense, with medium weight, making it harder to work with, and thus is usually reserved for necks. As a body wood, it provides a bright sound, with very strong highs and upper midrange but quieter bass frequencies. Overall, hard maple has a very long sustain.
o Western Soft Maple, also known as "big leaf maple", is much lighter in weight than Hard Maple. Like hard maple, it has a bright tone with good bite and attack, but is not as brittle as hard maple, and has singing highs with a tight low end. Typically, these are used in the construction of the guitar top.

I love my CS 64. It was made in 97 and I think they weren't trying to keep to the exact specifications at that point. IIRC, the early Cunetto's later turned into the Time Machine series which were supposed to have period correct features.

Here's some pics.
