I'm looking at a used Geddy Lee MIJ Jazz that is supposed to be a few years old and it bears serial number R0282XX (XX has real numbers). According to the Fender MIJ serial number list the R series was made from 2004 - 2005 but should have 5 digits not 6. Anyone know if this sounds legit and if there is any way to tell if this item is genuine short of disassembling it? Thanks.

Does this bass say MADE IN JAPAN or CRAFTED IN JAPAN? Your post said MIJ which I interpret as MADE IN JAPAN. Since you didn't post the actual serial I can't process it with 100% accuracy, but if I process the xx as 50 and change the MADE IN JAPAN to CRAFTED IN JAPAN, the Guitar Dater Project says:

"Your guitar was made at the
Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan
in the Year(s): 2004 - 2005

Fuji String Instrument Production Corporation
Fuji String Instrument Production Corporation was opened in may 1960, they initially started manufacturing violins and quickly switched to classical guitar production. In 1962 electric guitar construction was started. Fujigen has a reputation for excellent quality and craftsmanship so the guitars they produce are highly regarded. They produce guitars via OEM for famous brands such as Ibanez, Epiphone, Yamaha and Fender (the import Special Interest Group nature model), G&L and others."

HOWEVER if your bass says MADE IN JAPAN the software kicks it out as DOES NOT EXIST. CIJ and MIJ are two different things.

This is one of the premier plants for Asian made guitars.

Thanks for the info - it says Crafted in Japan. I emailed Fender cutomer support and they replied that the 2004-2005 series could have 5 or 6 digits following the R. The serial number guide on the Fender site only says R + 5 digits.
