I own a second hand Marcus Miller V with Lindy Fralin pickups. Since I own another MM5 with te original pickups too I noticed it sounded more balanced. The B and G string on the Fralins is too loud for my taste. The original pickups have raised pole pieces and for a reason I guess. I would like to order a pair of original pickups. Fender Germany told me it's not possible to order them.Does anyone know how and where to order them?

Thnx.

I don't think Fender sells the original pickups, but you might want to check out the Vintage "Noiseless" Jazz Bass® Pickups. They are available in either 4 or 5 string. If you have your heart set on the original pickups, ebay is probably your best bet. There are some sellers, who do nothing but take apart brand new Fenders and sell them as parts. I don't see any of the Marcus Miller pickups for sale right now, but usually, if you check regularly, you can find anything you're looking for.

I tried these in my MMV and they had anything but a "Vintage sound to them, but they weren't bad ither, however I think if you wanted the tone of the modern-esque ( IMO) Noiseless pickup then I think the Seymour Duncan Quater Pound Jazz pickup has better string to string Balance than the Fender Noiseless pups.
Also the Seymour Duncan 70/74's are excellent for the MMV

Just got me a pair of original pickups. Is there a difference between the neck and the bridge pickup? Can't see the difference.

Probably a slight difference in string spacing/pole spacing. Typically the bridge pickup will be slightly larger.

Mr. Fralin might could put in raised pole pieces to the specs of the original pickups. Contact him or Tom Brantley and see what that would cost. Probably way cheaper than buying another set. Contact Mr. Fralin during USA east coast business hours at 804-358-2699 or FAX anytime to: 804-358-3431. Or contact Mr. Brantley at 804-467-5887 also during business hours.

Raised pole pieces are probably optional from Mr. Fralin and he might be willing to re-work your pickup pole pieces to your exact specs. I do know that nobody is bigger on customer satisfaction. Apparently they weren't ordered staggered. It will cost something, but probably less than a new set of Fralin pickups.

Another option is the Bill Lawrence WILDE J-45 N and J-45 L pickups. Very vintage sounding pups that run $60 each with staggered (raised) poles. I'd also call them first during US west coast business hours to confirm availability of the staggered poles. Here is their contact information.

I use pickups from both of these shops. They both make excellent pickups.

With the WILDE pickups they make them all the same...but they are good basic economical pickups with a great tone. One major difference is the Bill Lawrence pickups are epoxy potted and the Lindy Fralin's are wax potted.

Most of the Fralin pups sold are standard wind without staggered poles, so if you want a custom wind or if you want staggered poles you need to order them direct from him or custom order through an authorized dealer. The cost is the same either way. If you don't like the Fralin pickups you can send them back within 30 days "for tonal reasons" and have them reworked.

There are links to both these shops on my website. Click the RESOURCES link in my forum signature below and then click REPLACEMENT/UPGRADE BASS PARTS.
