Simply put I'm not a bass player. Sorry. But I do have a question, I have a "Bass" case and I'm trying to find out if its a Jazz or Precision case. It is a black textured with white thread trim and black padded sides. It has the Fender logo under the handle and an extra layer of leather or whatever it is on the handle. The only distinctive thing I see is looking into the case where the body sets. the padding which protects the bottom of the bass is only on the back half of right side the case. This leads me think it is a fender Jazz bass, because the Jazz has the distinctive swoop bottom its not straight across the back like the Precision bass. The interior is a red plush color and the accessory box has one leather pull tab on it. Appreciate any thoughts here. Besides the obvious why did you buy it with out asking stupid, question.

You forgot to mention if it is a standard rectangular shaped case or it is a shaped (molded) case. As I understand it, the rectangular cases for basses are similar to the same cases for guitars in that both the P and J basses will fit in them just as a Strat and Tele both fit into the guitar cases. Not sure if this is always true but my J bass case will accomodate a P bass perfectly.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Well it is like the suit case type rectangular. Not the molded type cases.
that is good to know so they are both the same length. The problem I see is only the bottom half of the guitar would be protected (the swoop of the jazz bottom) the top would just be hanging in air because the padding does not go all the way across if it were a precision. I suppose the padding would protect it as at least half of the P would be on padding. Most cases seem to be padded the whole side from back to front. and would do as you say. But this one does not.

I can't believe this. I have the part numbers now thanks to iconoclaster but there is no part number on the case. anywhere. I've looked up the part numbers and half the stores use the same picture for both. And it must be an earlier model because it is red and the lining is not as thick as the orange French poodle looking insides of the new ones. Anyone willing to try looking at it who knows the difference I'll send good pictures of it.
email me at bo.stew86@myactv.net. I hate to see this go to waste.

Yea I did the same thing top to bottom under over inside you would think they would put something to ID it. I take it you have a Jazz base. do happen to know or could you measure the entire length of it. for me.
I see a couple on Ebay that look exactly like it. Old Stock new in a box.
He is calling it a Precision from around 2000. I find it hard to believe but he could be right. He says it absolutely will not fit a Jazz. So I'm thinking if I had the length of the Jazz from the bottom lowest point to the top I could see if the Jazz would fit or not. Or if you have a P that would be good to at least I could confirm somthing. I measured the case from the top where the head stock would touch the pad to the bottom where it toches the edge of the pad and get 45 1/4 inches. it goes straitht up thru a narrow U where the neck goes through.
By the way thanks for all your help with this.

Well that settles it then. there is no way a Jazz will go in this. So the guy is right. the head stock would stick right out of the case. Buy the way that is one nice looking J bass you have there. I think you just saved me from a waste of time and money. I was thinking of driving 60 miles to the nearest Guitar Center. What can I say but thanks.

That is just plain incredible. If I was not so busy just saying alive and keeping up with the guitar. I would have to try bass now you got that imprinted in my head. Thanks again Its not often I feel like some one followed through clear to the end like you did. In fact. Well Its good to know in your gut. I was slowly giving up on seeing the kind of commitment you just showed me in your builds, and to me. I.E. it means a lot to me.

Happy to help.

That LPB bass is a home-brewed concoction, identical to a 3TSB one I built for my brother last year.

Basically, the MIM body with US hardware and electronics. The chocolate tuxedo necks came from Allparts (who build the necks for the current Geddy Lee artist model).

Thanks for the kind words.

Wow, that bass looks just like mine did back when I bought it. It had black strings though. Ahh the memories.
