Hi all, I'm thinking of putting the classic brige over(?) on my bass. Are they just for looks or do they actually have a purpose. I remember something about a foam rubber strip to mute the strings. Is this true? Thanks

I dont know about the foam rubber thing but i think it's all cosmetic. If you like the look or not.

I use foam, like packing foam cut into strips under the strings, on roundwounds and felt wraps on flats. See the post in the P-bass form with photos on it here: http://www.fender.com/community/forums/viewtopic.php?t=19070

Unlike the rubber "weatherstripping" both mods are removable and replaceable as needed.

I think pickup covers matter more than a bridge cover. James L. Jamerson insisted his covers mattered. Besides, they look cool! On a Jazz the bridge cover also covers the bridge pickup!

On the downside they prevent you from playing over the pickup or very close to the bridge and the pickup cover also restricts you from moving above and below the neck pickup cover for tonal or dynamic variations during busy passages. They also add a tad to the weight of the instrument. In spite of the downsides, I use them on my Fender P-basses. I like the vintage look and I think they help a bit in RFI reduction.

In my case, I have a Precision Standard Bass and a Power Jazz Bass Special.

Due to some observed accidents on stage over the years with the open, uncovered bridges being snagged by trousers or cords and knocked off the stands, I have installed the appropriate Fender vintage bridge covers ( minus the rubber snubbers ) on both of my Fender basses. This not only gives the look and style of vintage products, but keeps the sharp pertrusions on exposed bridges from snagging on things. Besides, who doesn't like chrome ???

By the way - I just went with two NeoTech highly padded Mega Straps on both of my Fenders...... Much better weight distribution over a wider shoulder area with all that 'extra chrome'. LOL
