I've been thinking about going active on my Jazz. Anyone installed the EMG J pick ups? Where'd you put the battery? How has it worked out? Any opinions will help. Thanks.

Installing EMGs is no big deal. You follow the instructions and replace all of the pots and knobs along with the pickups.

EMGs don't use the ground wire to the strings, making your bass safer to play, but you do have to allow for a battery, which should fit in the bottom of your control cavity.

Don't rout the bass for a battery cavity if you can help it!

Keep your bass as stock capable as possible.
good luck,

BCBassman makes some good points. Here's my opinion.

I'd just get an active Jazz, the Geddy Lee is a fine bass stock. There isn't much I'd change about it. There are times when you need passive and other times you need active. For the money it is going to cost you could make a rather large down payment on a new $810 Actuve Jazz or buy one used for $350 to $400.

Lots of people don't care much for active tones. So play an active and a passive at a store and then decide. I prefer the more organic passive tones, but I do have an active Ibanez SRX700 bass in case I need an active MM type tone. Even though it is light and plays great, I hardly ever use it. Sometimes I'll take it to a gig as a backup and play it on a couple of really rocking songs but I don't think I've used it since January. I got it to record with and it is great for that because the electronics are very quiet.
