Hello all,

I just registered to ask a question that I can't seem to find an answer to...

I just picked up a MIJ '75 RI Jazz bass off ebay (should have it next Thursday), and I'm looking to replace the white PG with a tortoise shell one.
Mine looks to be 11 screw, with 2 holes for the pickup cover and 2 for the thumbrest, below the G string.
The question is - what other PGs can I get in tort to replace the stock white one?
The '62 RI looks to be a fit including the 2+2 for the pup and thumbrest, but I need to know for sure so I'm not wasting time and money buying them until I luck into one that fits (and I don't want to drill the body).

I'd be open to anything that works with the outer perimeter of screws. I don't even care about the 11th, in front of the neck pickup.
I also don't care about the 2 holes for the pickup cover, and would even prefer not having the 2 for the (IMO) stupidly-placed thumbrest below the the G string. But I wouldn't mind if it had the 2 holes for the properly placed thumbrest above the low E string (I might drill the body for that).

Of course, if I'm "stuck" in having to live with an original for a '75 RI, that's not a problem. I just need to know where I can get one at a decent price.
Google hasn't been much help. There's no shortage of tort PGs on evilbay, I just need to know which one will fit.

Thanks,
Chuck

Hello I had a 76 jazz i found in 78. three years later i took off the p.g. to see how it looked. That night i played it and i couldn't believe what i heard Then i put it back on, it sounded muted. I took it off and never put back on. I got a 03 highway 1 jazz in 05, took it off, samething happened. It opened up the wood to vibrate on the top were the tones were muted before.Try some GHS pressure wound strings on the jazz. It makes a jazz bass less brighter, more rounder. And they don't chew on the frets. Have fun exploring the jazz bass Rare bird

I'll try that today, rare bird.

I have plans for this bass - I want a maple board instead of the rosewood that I have now.
I'm looking at a MIJ '72 Reissue, but wonder if it will fit. It is a 3-bolt as well, any thoughts?

I also want a Badass II bridge.

This is my first Fender bass, so I'm still learning the Fender line-up. My last bass was an '82 Ibanez Musician that I bought new in '82 in Mannys in NYC. I just got rid of it 2 years ago, had to pay the bills and wasn't really playing it much anymore.
Active, 2 octave neck-thru... I could get almost ANY sound out of that one.
A little history on it - it was supposed to be Polar White, but there was a really cool neon green cast to it. Someone told me that it was a mistake that Ibanez made in mixing the color. There were only 1,000 made before they caught it.
The 2nd person to play it after me was Joey Pecorino (who was a friend of a friend), who played John Lennon in Beatlemania back then.
He wanted to buy it from me. :D

Hello ST1ng.The cool thing about fender guitars you can change the neck anytime you want. There are many neck companys that you can get anything you want. The can cut a neck to your specs. A badass bridge is cool, but there is a vibe when you use the fender bridge. IT is all up to what you want.Get them both, Play around with it. Let me know what you do. Have fun with it. Rare Bird

Have you found a solution yet? I have an 85 MIJ Jazz bass (70s reissue) and I'm looking for a black pickguard as well. WDmusic wants $75 to make it for me, but I'd prefer a cheaper workaround. I'm fine with losing a few holes as long as the majority lineup.

Thanks,
Govinda

Sorry Govinda,
I never got an e-mail notification that you posted a reply.

I ordered one from pickguards.us (which is just the web URL for Chandler Music in Chico CA) for $51.00 + $12.00 shipping. They say there's a 3 week lead-time, but it's been over 3 weeks and I still haven't gotten it yet, nor have I heard from them.
So don't take the fact the I ordered from them a happy endorsement.

I too would have been happy with losing a few holes as long as the majority secured it in place, but I had no idea how close to impossible it would be to locate on on evilbay or anywhere else!
I only ordered from Chandler because my bass has a specific model in their line-up (#378, in case your curious). Hopefully I get it at all...

Good luck,
Chuck

I ended up getting a custom pickguard from Jeannie Pickguards. I mailed Roger my pickguard and he copied it and sent it back within 3 days for only $32, including shipping. It came out excellent.

Here's his website - http://home.comcast.net/~pickguards/
