Hey everyone,
I've got an '04 American Fretless Jazz with the stock 3-Knob controls (Vol, Vol, Tone) and S-1 switch, and I'm thinking about converting it to the concentric controls from the '62 Jazz. I used Fender's parts lists and wiring diagrams to figure out what parts I need, but my question concerns the wiring:

I will obviously be getting rid of the S-1 switch, but I know the S-1 system has a couple extra wires and grounding lug in there. Is there anything special I need to do with these when I put in the new pots, or can I just wire it up like the '62 Jazz diagram shows?

Thanks!

TriumphRider,

I just looked at the wiring diagram for your bass. There is nothing extra to do to get the concentric knob type configuration. Follow it's wiring diagram and parts list and you will have no problems.

One word, the parts are not easy to find. If you have troubles, post a message and I will post the sources I used to aquire them.

I just did that conversion on my MIM Jazz Bass. Just follow the wiring for the '62 and you should have no problems.

Thanks for the help everyone!

My local guitar shop had the pots and knobs in stock (I was really surprised). Radio Shack didn't have the .03uf capacitor, so I ordered that and the control plate online...I just need to pick up some wire, and when my online order arrives I'll be good to go.

I'll post some pics up here when its done.

I've got concentric knobs on my 62 Jazz reissue and really like having the ability to adjust the tone separately for each pickup as opposed to having just one tone knob apply to both.

All the parts finally came in the mail, and the conversion is complete..on the first try! This was my first time doing any electric mods on a guitar, although my soldering experience from a past part-time job helped.

Don't have pics yet, but I'll post some up of the final product. The new sounds are amazing! Thanks to everyone for their input. 8)

Here's the "after" pics...I went with chrome knobs instead of black on the bottom, just because, well, I like chrome I guess. 8)

Same pickguard, maybe it looks different because of the angle of the pic/light?
