Backing off either volume control or the tone control from full on will induce a hum when connected to my Tasco Bass Trainer or my Beringer amp. The hum is louder the closer my guitar is to either device.

Is this a common problem with this model or is it a warranty issue?

To follow up, I took it to my dealer and they assure me that what I'm hearing is normal for this model. Looks like a pickup upgrade is in my future.

If you choose to upgrade your pickups, that's fine, but do it for the right reasons. When I first purchased my MIM Jazz, I had the same issue with hum. After weeding through all the suggestions, I tried something unrelated to the bass itself: I tested the grounding of the electrical outlets in my home. I discovered that half of them did not have a proper earth ground. Most times, we never notice this, because the devices we plug in are not susceptible to ground noise. So I found an outlet that did have a proper ground and ran a grounded powerstrip from it to insure that none of the devices I use for recording would introduce the annoying hum.

Also keep in mind that things like TV screens, flourescent lights, and cheap electronics can wreak havok on the pickups of a bass guitar. Finally, if the shielding on your bass is poorly done, that also will cause a problem.

There is good news. After troubleshooting each of these areas, I experience no hum, even after upgrading my pickups, using the excellent faq found on Talkbass.
