With this thread on the rebound, I should say that the real, old school Fender sound has alot to do with how bowed the neck is. A forward bow on the neck means less tension on the string, giving more burp tone.

I had a Blizzard Pearl 08 with rosewood. It wasn't that it was too this or that or what kind of strings- it just didn't have a good resonate sound. It was a dud. I put pickups in it and that didn't help. Just a thin sounding piece of wood or whatever. I've had duds before and nothing one can do can make it better-- I quit spending money on dud basses. Now I just get rid of them. Dud is real people. Sell or trade all duds. I figure if a bass sounds good to begin with stock - then new pickups and things should only make it sound even better. Duds can't be made better. I say it's something with the wood of the body/neck/ and the type finish. Bro Dave knows about this type of thing. It's not just me.

That kind of ties in with my thoughts and examples that a Fender bass should not have a real low string height to get that burp/honk sound. I agree .

This was a particularly bad example, but I don't know if I've ever been really knocked out by anything in the American Standard series , come to think of it. I don't think I've played an AM Std. J bass that really sounded or felt "right". The P basses seem to fare a bit better, I had a '12 sunburst Precision briefly ( before I had to unfortunately sell it) , that sounded and played really nice. For the most part, though, basses in the AM Special, Vintage, and MIM ranges just seem to work better for me.
