hey all, i got a used year 2000 standard j bass, and i have a question about the pickup volume knobs.

i get zero volume until they are 3/4 of the way up. is this normal? i am also not getting the range of tones that my buddy's jazz bass gets. he also has a passive j bass (no active pickups or preamp)...

could it be that something is wrong with the pickups or wiring?

Check your amp! You may have the mids or something dialed out.

i am going to open up the control plate this weekend to see if i can see any cold solder joints.

if not, do you have any passive pickup recommendations? i would like to use the audere preamp eventually...

By standard Jazz - Do you mean US made or Mexican?
If the pickups work - i.e. you get sound from both volume controls then I would check out the pots and raise the pickups.

A good repair person can see if the pots are the problem.

If its a Mexi bass, I would drop in some DiMarzios. Their Model Js are resonably priced.

Good Luck

I have a similar problem. Have just bought a brand new MIM 1970s Classic Jazz (the one with the block inlays on the rosewood neck).
Very happy with it EXCEPT the only volume control that appears to work is the one for the neck pickup; the bridge pickup volumne does next to little. If i turn the neck pickup volume all the way off, there is virtually no sound from the bass, even with the bridge pickup volume on "full".
Intuitively i know this is not how it is supposed to be but, given that i am new to the world of the Jazz, i just want to run it by you guys first to make sure i am not missing something obvious.
If it is a faulty bridge pickup or volume control i guess i will have to send the bass back to where i bought it, and get it repaired under the two year warranty...
Thanks in advance. Sorry if the question is idiotic to you experienced Jazz players!

That sounds like a bad volume control connection for the bridge pickup. I doubt that they installed a dead pickup but I guess that it is possible.

Take it back so that you don't void the warranty but one thing to watch out for on your Jazz or any bass is that if the volume pot becomes loose, you can break the connecting wires from the pickup by just trying to turn up your volume.

You can probably see the broken connection just by taking off the control plate on the Jazz bass. That is only removing three screws, but you should prob. just take it back and let the dealer fix it under warranty.

It could be a bad pickup and you don't want to be stuck for paying for that.

thanks BCbassman. It's going back to the dealer on Monday to be fixed.

Bass guys alla round, my turn to ask silly questions.
I always play mY MIM jazz with the neck pickup full-on and the bridge pickup to a quarter.
Always done that; anyway, a few days ago I tried to play with both pickups full-on and, hear hear, they cancel each other out , or something.
The sound gets muffled, as if somebody had put a pillow over my amp.
As soon as I get the volume slightly down on one of the pickups, everything goes back to normal and I get a good sound from my bass.
What kind of problem is that?
Should I get the bass checked under the warranty or should I try to fix the problem somehow?
Hope one of you guys can help me shed some light.
See ya

This is avery common problem that occurs in Fender Jazz basses when one of the pickups is either reverse wound or installed out of phase with the other pickup. Either pickup will sound fine by itself but both together will cancel out each other and sound very thin or muffled.
The fix is that you reverse the pickup leads on just one pickup at the point where the PU wires are soldered to the controls.
If you don't feel like you can do this , take it to a repair shop and tell them what your are hearing. It should be a quick fix.

Thanks, man, you're a lifesaver.
I'll try the reverse trick at once.
See you
C.

There is DEFINITELY something wrong. Impossible to tell exactly what without actually looking at it. If it is under warranty take it to the dealer you bought it from first. The pickups could be out of phase as someone else mentioned.

Hard to believe this got by quality control!

Yo, BC,
the reverse trick didn't work; it really was simple but the problem lies elsewhere....
Time for plan B: what the heck can I do?
Strange flaw: single p-ups ok, can't use them together full power.
Any other suggestion?
Please?
Any help is welcome
