i have a 63 vintage j bass, red in color, black pick guard. has the pick covers on it. my question is i'm thinking of refinishing it, in a camealon automotive paint. i have a pint left over from doing my gold wing and thought about doing my bass the same. iv'e never done a guitar, and would like some advice on striping the hardware off, pickups, pots, and such before i take it in to be done. what should i not do, or do, to make it go easier? don't want to screw somthing up. any thoughts?

I hope I don't offend you but...DON'T REFIN THAT BASS!!! If you have a real '63 Jazz, I don't care if it looks like it's been dragged behind a truck from a chain...PLEASE don't refinish it! I know you may not have plans to sell it, but it will lose MOST of it's value!

thank you for that information. i'm 63 yrs.old bought it new, still use it, did'nt realize they are worth that much and so scarice. it realy isn't in to sad of shape, i'm very particular with all my gear. it has two small chips on the bottom it recieved before guitar stands became so pouplar years ago. i have always used a small cover on the top, to keep the sweat and rubbing wear off of it. i have protected the pick guard all these years buy keeping it covered with saran wrap. which has worked wonderfully! if you take some time it is allmost impossible to see, and is suprisingly strong. to protect the back of the neck more i keep it waxed. with a combination of heated parifaine, and tung oil aply it warm, let it cool, then lightly buff it, for me it was so slick, it took some geeting used to, but made for a very fast action, makes other necks feel like sand paper. my wife tells me i'm anal about it but for me it has payed off. thanks again for the info, this is a wonderful site, virgil...

Have you noticed what's in with younger people in today's culture. It's cool to wear worn-looking t-shirts, pants with holes and other things that make 'em look like a roughed up roadie. You may not have noticed, but even fender has jumped on the band wagon with their new "road-worn series". You probably shouldn't refinish it.

If you must refinish though, I suggest you buy some rough sandpaper, and a lot of it. If you use an electric sander, the finish and paint will gunk up the paper and it won't work. You'll want to sand it by hand. Just a warning, but the finish that they use is super freakin' hardcore. Do not attempt to use paint stripper, it won't work.

To take the electronics out, first, loosen the strings.
reduce all tension on the truss rod
take the strings off completely
take the fretboard off
unscrew the bridge
take knobs off
take backplate off and take close pictures of wiring
loosen and remove pots
take jack plug off
try to remove all wiring without cutting
cut what you must
remove pickguard
remove pickups
finally remove strap buttons

Then you can work at refinishing. Do not forget to use a good finish or else it will come off.

Make the right choice. Don't refinish.
