So this is my new J. Well...new to me anyway. It's a '93 MIJ. It's almost flawless! Anyway... So I've read a few posts on various forums about people thinking that the tone of the Japanese pickups isn't as good as others. What do you think? I have no problem with mods on this bass. If it were you, what pickups would you think? I'm also thinking about putting the "ash tray" and pickup covers on it. You think that might look cool with this color combo or am I just getting caught up in the "Fender moment"? Thanks for you input.

i have a bass which looks the same and i wanted the ash trays, but to me they made the bass hard to play so i didnt. it looks good though.

the mods i would do would be:

Badass II bridge.

Fender USA standard jazz bass pickups.

I do agree that the badass bridge is a good idea. The stock Fender bridges were always kinda light. But me personlly, I'm not as quick to change pickups. Its best to play it for a while and test its ability.

I wouldn't change anything on your bass. One thing that I owuld check is that the pickups have a good piece of foam under neath them so that they remain adjustable. Often the foam strips that push up on the pickups wears out. Putting in a new piece of wheather stripping will help you to be able to adjust those pickups to get the most out of them.

I wouldn't change the bridge. Just adjust the one you have for correct intonation and play that sucker!
