I have an early 2000 MIA jazz / 4 string that has issues with the E & A string when tuning. Basically, it goes from "on" when open to "sharp" when fretted. The signal will vary each time I attempt to tune it.

I've had a local luthier (a graduate from Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery & worked for Lakland Basses in Chicago) adjust this bass 3 different times and it refuses to get along with me. He mentioned that some individual instruments just never fix.

I even put on a Badass bridge hoping it was in the saddle. Nope.

In my life, this is my 3rd Jazz (my first was a '63 bought in '69), all have been American, and I've never run across this problem. I've also owned a Japan Percision that was solid. I have an early 1980's Hammer Cruisebass that has been everywhere & in every weather condition imaginable and it has never wained from pitch.

So, if this particular guitar won't "fix", have any of you had Fender simply replace the guitar or take it in to their shop and make the necessary adjustments? It's a Fender, for God's sake! It should work perfectly....well, it should at least hold a note.

sounds like the nut slots for those strings need to be deepened.

I noticed that the E string on vintage jazz's are factory equipped with 100's and newer models have 110's. I use 105's.

Maybe a string change would help.

A little bit of info for ya.
Ever hear of Buzz Feiten tuning system? well it came about due to the fact that ALL guitars play sharp at the first fret(s), he designed this system to alleviate this problem; not that this info helps you any.

Ok, when you take an instrument to a tech and or luthier and you tell them the problem, depending on the person/tech you can bias their opinion and direction of work to never discover the actual problem; because what you told them has focused them to an area (the problem area).
A way to put a 'mask' on your problem would be to send your intonation to the flat side, in other words compromise to counteract the sharpness.
A question, is it sharp on a tuner or just your ear?
Did you widen your nut slots to accept the wider gauge strings?
Theres a million questions that need answering to even begin to deduct what the cause may be.

Sounds like a bad bass, better sell it to me to avoid further aggrivation. I'll give you a crisp new $20 for it.
Franny57 has some good points. Have you thought of/tried a new neck?
