I'm about to get a New American Standard Jazz Bass with sunburst finish. I've had rosewood fretboard on all the guitars I've had, just cos I like how they look. I have a P-Bass right now with rosewood on it.

I know that there's a difference in sound between maple and rosewood. I just want to know what your preference is and why and if you have any advise or feedbacks regarding maple or rosewood.

I play mostly pop-rock, we go from loud to soft rock and I play acoustic sets as well. I love The Beatles and Brit-pop style of music. I want to get into jazz a bit as well in the future, and learn to improvise.

This will be an expensive investment for me, I want to get the right one. what do you guys think :?:

Thanks for your response in advance!!! :)

My personal opinion is to go play both and then buy the one YOU like best.

Thanks! That's a good and obvious advise. I've already tried playing both at the local guitar store and I like both, ya know, it's just one of those things. That's why it's hard and that's why I'm asking for opinions and feedback to help make up my mind. I wish I can just buy both but I can't, hehe.

And it's fun to talk about these things, I'm sure other people outthere will find it helpful as well.

I think that there are at least as many differences between particular slabs of the same type of wood as there are between different types of wood themselves. For instance, maple cut from one part of a particular tree can sound vastly different from maple cut from a different section of a different tree. While the species of tree tends to cause a wood's sound to tend toward one direction or another, it is only an indication of what might happen, not a description of what will happen. So what someone likes about the sound of their maple necked jazz bass is more than likely particular to that bass, and not really related to what wood the neck is made of.

I like rosewood. I like the way it looks, and maple sounds kinda snappy, I don't like "snappy" with my bass (j bass). But that’s my personal opinion.

Good luck on your purchase, choices are so hard to make sometimes.

Of my '08 american standard 5's.... My P-bass has a maple neck and the Jazz, a rosewood. I gotta say I like the Jazz/Rosewood combination better.
But thats just me.

i would have to say that it is too hard of a decision. i dunno. if you have a tobacco sunburst finsh on your bass you may want to go with a rosewood fretboard but if you have something like a butterscotch finish def go for the maple. i really want a brighter tone fretboard lately :)

IMO the tonal differences between maple and rosewood are so small that I cannot really tell. There are alot of factors regarding your bass tone, and to me the fretboard wood is a small one. Body woods, pickups/electronics, strings, and playing technique have more influence over your tone.
I choose rosewood or maple solely on color configuration.
white, off-white, cream/rosewood
3TS/rosewood
black with a black pg/maple
black with a tort pg/rosewood
blue/maple

I play a '62 American Jazz Reissue, and boy do i wish i had one with a maple neck. I'm so used to the rosewood, rare to see a Jazz with a maple neck, but that would be nice to have.

To me Maple has a brighter tone than rosewood but thats about it
i prefer maple because i think it looks cool especially after years and years of use for example the david gilmour strat with its orangish gold neck i think it just looks awesome but i think i will always want at least one rosewood jazz and one maple p-bass all the time. :P :P
