I have asked this question on another forum, but I still have the same dilemma. 124 or OFPF (One finger Per Fret)? It seems as I can't move forward as well as I should because I keep trying both techniques.

Hi Ron.

great question.

what i always get my students to do is the typical warm up from pinky on the 12th and do some OFPF spider exercise all the way down to the nut.

then once we're warmed up we might do some scale work and patterns like that in between the nut and the 7th fret in which we do employ OFPF

BUT!!!

that's largely due to get the shapes/patterns down and recognizing them on the fingerboard.

In most 'normal' playing situations, I'll use double-bass fingering (124) for anything and everything below the 5th-7th fret. for everything else up the neck (past the 7th) I'll use OFPF.

the exception to this is if there are fast or weird patterns 'down below' where OFPF makes it easier/more logical to use.

soooo..... to make a short story even longer.

my rule of thumb is. OFPF past the 7th, 124 below the 7th BUT always use your discretion for what the line needs.

(hope that was a bit clearer than mud)

One finger per fret without a doubt. Just gotta practice and practice and practice and practice and practice and practice and practice.

Thanks for your input. I started out 124 doing fine using Hal Leonard Bass Method (Complete Edition) then it switched to OFPF with no real guidance when to switch back. Adding to the mix I picked up The Electric Bass Method (Beginning, Intermediate, Mastering) which is all OFPF, but I find the information very useful.

What I find odd is when I watch other bass player they all seem to be 124 up and down the neck, is that because their roots are more upright bass?

more ergonomics than upright background I would think

124 is just more comfortable and ergonomic in most settings

I will take your advice: "always use your discretion for what the line needs."

Thanks
