Hi, everyone. I'm interested in learning how to play bass and am not sure whether to get a J-bass or P-bass.

I like the look of the Jazz bass (I'm a Tele player and the metal control plate really speaks to me), but that's cosmetic. The P-bass looks like it gives more tone options. How do the two different instruments compare? I'd love any and all thoughts on the subject :)

Thanks for reading!

It's pretty simple for me. I just like the feel of the J-Bass neck better. I like the tones of both but, the J-Bass just feels more comfortable and seems like I can practice a little longer with the thinner neck.

Actually the Jazz bass will give you more tone options.
Here are a couple links to help the Jazz v. Precision debate.

Hard to say,

One thing I noticed is that I am not a fan of the sound when playing a Jazz with a pick, but sounds great if you play with your fingers. It also has a larger variety of tones than the Precision.

The Precision sounds great though with your fingers or a pick. Great for bluesy or Motown type stuff, and awesome for rock. Also I like the width of the neck better too.

Comes down to which sounds better to you. The feel and stuff is important but you can always adjust, you can change the sound as easily.

Personaly I prefer the precision because I don't like the Jazz's feel (unless it's upside down for some wierd reason) but the jazz has more tonal variety, and does sound and play great. It's all down to which you like best, and who says you can't have both eventualy?

Should also mention finger pick, it sounds much more natural, and will better represent the sound of the bass, that and finger picking on a jazz is a must.

Personally, I prefer the Jazz Bass. I may be biased, since I own one. I guess it depends on your preference. Go to your nearest music shop and try them both out.

Both the J and P are great basses thats why I have one of each ....If I could only have one it would be the J with the S1 swich it gives you the best of both worlds......I have a 60th ana. J that has the 62ri pups... it was the only production fender that came with the 62ri pups and the s1 swich...you can still find these you might want to check one of these out

For me I like Thinner Necks. It's Great for Fast Stuff. I Love playing Thrash Metal and that for me was hard with a Thicker Neck. For me anyways. But the Great Thing is if you buy either a Fender Jazz or Percision, you will still end up with a Quality Bass.

Basically, it comes down to two things. #1 What sounds best to your ear. #2 What feels the most comfortable to you. It is ultimatley your decision. Whatever anyone tells you, it still comes down to what you like.
Both the precision and the jazz are great basses. You won't go wrong with either one. Just take your time. If you demo both of them enough, you will come to realize which one is best for you. Good luck.

I just exchanged a Highway One P-Bass that I had for 13 days for a Highway One Jazz Bass. I didn't like the G String. I even raised the pickup & when I did a walk up the neck & strings it sounded like I cut the volume. I already have a Mexican Jazz Fretless & am familiar with the sound I like. I have flats on it.

That settled it for me.

I'm quite surprised that a lot of people said they like P-bass on this thread, especially because it's in the Jazz Bass section!

On the P-bass section people talked about their love for P-basses, they are very enthusiastic about it, so I thought the J-bass lovers would do the same here.

I have a p-bass and I'm about to buy a New American Standard Jazz Bass. I like to have both. I can't really say for sure which one I like better at the moment but I really love the tone of a P-bass for rock songs.
