Good evening Lords of Low Frequency I was wondering which is better, flat wound strings or round wound? I definately love a low tone. I'm not too bright on the bright ones. Also, are the nylon strings worth getting?

i have an answer for you my friend. i am a frequently gigging musician and personally i gotta go with flatwounds. the low tones are AWESOME! and if you have a jazz bass (which hopefully you do) you can get all the highs you want using your tone knob.

Bassdude15, thanks. Yes I do have a black and white Jazz Bass with Fender 9050s flatwounds on it. Have you tried the nylons?

I like that alot, Lords of Low Frequency.

My 1st choice is Flats. I have 2 P-basses, one with flats and one with halfrounds. My sloppy technique with rounds makes me sound like Fieldy.

no jeff i havent tried nylons. of course the whole rumor about " nylons suck" is probably the reason  i guess they would be for the purpose of anti-blister. then again. i dont even notice the littles nicks in my fingers after gigs anymore

amen on the anti-fretbuzz tommygun. i have my action kinda low cause i like to play really fast sometimes. i had round wounds and the guys in the band were like "stop playing so hard!" it eventually got on my nerves so i tried out some flatwounds and just stuck to them.

Both have their Pro's & Cons, so what I came up with is this. I have 2 Jazz Basses. 1 set-up with Flat-Wounds, and 1 Set-Up with Round-Wounds. I'm good to go. lol

I've used flats before, but they can record badly, and go dead quite fast. Half-rounds (from D'Addario) sound great on my '67 Höfner. I tried some flats on my custom order Rick and only used them for a couple of tracks.
Definitely NOT what I was hoping for.

I've stuck with round wounds on it (Smith brand now), and they really bring the sound of the pickup alive. All the low end you want, great sustain, and much much longer lasting.

Just my 2¢

I have used all three main varieties on my '87 Fender ® Power Jazz Bass Special and I always go back to the "GHS" brand Flatwound 45-105 medium stainless stringset. This gives me more flexibility in my style than roundwounds and more action than the hybrid halfwounds. Sustain on my particular bass using the "GHS" flatwounds is exactly the same as with the "GHS" roundwounds - without the high frequency screeching from finger drag. There is very little in the way of control readjustment needed for depth and brightness between the flat and round types on my Jass Bass, but the flatwounds are best in my book for what I expect out of my Bass and Fender ® Rumble 100 amp.

Just my opinion from experience, but they give me the performance that I am after without the high maintenance and constant cleaning as required with the roundwounds. The next time your roundwounds are due for replacing, check out the "GHS" flatwounds and have a go at it... Best of luck and enjoy...

I used to use rotosound swing bass 66, great strings. But then I tried flatwound and i'm hooked. Awhile back I installed vintage '62 fender jazz pickups and when I put those fender flat wound 9050s on I found that the tone and feel was amazing. I can't see going back to round wound on that jazz bass. Have fun.

I once had a set of those on my Höfner bass (ala LIB) and they were ok, but nothing to write home about. Interesting look though, for sure.

I use steel rounds on my active Jazz and Steel flats on my passive Jazz. I really can't decide which I like better. I recently started usin Fender stings and I like them better than most other brands I have tried. They are cheaper too.
