My involvement in bass playing has been an ongoing adventure since 1965. After hearing about the quality and flexibility of the Fender products over the years, I purchased a Rumble 100 amp last year and eventually wanted to replace my older Kay Proline ® bass with a Fender Power Jazz Bass ®... which I did on January 14. A contact at a local music store let me know that he had a 1987 Fender Power Jazz Bass ® (Special) in really excellent condition. I looked it over, and bought it on the spot.

I accessed the Fender database and downlloaded the user's manual... but there doesn't seem to be any explaination of how the POWERED circuit is turned on or off. The only thing that I can think of is when the tip of the guitar cord plug is inserted in the jack on the side of the body, that it activates a point switch that turns on the electronics OR is that circuit enabled in some other way that I am not seeing ??? Thanks ahead of time for your answer(s) for this newbie to the relm of Fender basses. :)

Hello Luke,

I'm not familiar with the model you are talking about but other basses I have had that used power circuitry usually were activated by pulling out on one of the volume knobs. Pulling the knob out is ON pushing it back in would be OFF. Give it a try.

Thanks for the reply, Gene - Unfortunately, that's not the case with this Power Jazz Bass ®. If one of the Fender staff members who moderates this area could respond, I'd appreciate it. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact them directly here in the Forum (PM, etc). Thank you.

Every bass that I've owned that had an active preamp was turned on or off by inserting the instrument cable into the jack.

That's why if you leave the bass plugged in when you're not using it, the batteries will die very quickly.

I agree, by default assume if the cable is in, it's on.

Thank you all for the good info. I had the 'bright idea' to take the inspection cover off and inspect the active components and sure enough - there is a trigger source going from the output jack to a switching diode which does the battery activating when the cord plug is in place.

Again, thanks and I appreciate the assist ! :)

By the way - I asked the dealer which battery that their service department recommends and he said, 9 volt Lithium. That way, there is very little chance of things going 'quiet' during a gig.
