Hello fellow Jazzers,

I am going to mod my VM Fretless with an Audere JZ3 Preamp. The June 08 issue of Bass Player gave it a great review.
Has anyone installed this mod? If so,what are your thoughts, pro or con?

I had added one to a Geddy Lee jazz bass I had. The Audere is very well built and fairly easy to install. But overall I was a bit disappointed with the sound results. I had a very hard time dialing in a sound I liked and was usable. I think it may had to more with the stock Geddy Lee pickups which were not that good to begin with. If it had better pickups, I think I might have had a better chance in seeing what this preamp can really do.

Lesson learned, I think if you have crappy pickups to begin with the Audere will not bring much to the table. Now if I had installed it into my America Jazz FMT which has way better pickups then the Geddy, I think the Audere would really show its stuff.

I have a Fender Custom Classic Jazz. I love the bass but HATE the preamp.

I replaced it with an Audere two band preamp. I really like the new preamp. Very easy to install. And the Z mode switches are really cool; I use it more than the tone controls.

Just so you know, I'd say it leans towards a more modern sound; very articulate.

Finally, I've been using it with the stock, noiseless pickups. I'm not sure how it'd work with other pickups.

I thought the same thing as well. If you install some DiMArzio Model J's it'll sing with the Audere.

Meshica,

Overall I believe it's a nice preamp that has several Usable tones. It colors your bass just a bit, while allowing you to have an EQ. The low Z mode doesn't have much output, but is nice if you're going for a mellow blues tone. For Rock the mid and high modes are best, with the high mode providing a nice punchy/snappy tone. I enjoy the high mode with a little mids and lows added. I customized my bass and added a 3band with tone knob preamp....check the pics.

There are two pots on the preamp that control the gain of each pickup in Low Z mode. This can provide tons of gain.

You could actually use it as a boost function.

I've looked at these before. This may be a dumb question, but do the Auderes have a by-pass switch to use if you want a stock pup sound or a dead battery?

No bypass. You have to have a good battery.

But, that's the deal with the blue light. It starts to flash when the battery is running down. You should have plenty of time to change the battery.

A good mod / upgrade to a passive or active bass. Not exactly cheap, but a good way to get a more versatile eq set up w/o altering the looks of your bass.

Thanks Leon.

I have in the past, but it can get a bit dirty sounding...could just be my headset...may have to give it a try live. I always forget about having the ability to turn the gain up.

This bass is Made in Mexico FSR -Modified with a Badass II bridge, Samarium cobalt Noiseless pickups, and an Audere preamp. I love how it sounds now. The ash body just makes the tone shine! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oc5CwHc2ns
