Hi, I'm new, to the bass and to the forums. Well, I have been playing for about 10 months but whatever. I was sick of being laughed at for my First Act bass so I asked my instructor what bass he would buy if he only wanted one for all types of music and he was willing to spend $1200. He said there was no question, Fender American Standard Jazz. So I went and bought one. It was a leftover from last year, white with one little blem. I paid $749 for it. I'm pretty sure I didn't get ripped off but y'all might think differently.

Anyway, like I said, I've been at it for about 10 months and my instructor says I'm way ahead of the curve. Maybe he's just paid to say stuff like that but whatever. The point is that I love it and want to keep at it. Thing is, my instructor is like a Jazz guy and I have a rock & roll soul. He teaches me whatever i want to learn but I had a bad experience with the last song I tried (The Immigrant Song). I'm not there yet. It's too fast for me.

My question is, what classic rock songs would you give an ahead of the curve, first year guy if you were his instructor? I already know Money, Sunshine of Your Love, White Room, Day Tripper, Iron Man, Paranoid, Sweat Leaf, Aqualung, Back in Black, A couple of Allman brothers tunes I can't remember the names of and, of all things, The Ballad of John and Yoko. This and some Blues and Jazz stuff that my instructor seems to think is important for my development. I can never remember the names of that stuff though. It's not really "my music" if you get my drift. The thing I've been practicing this week is some trumpet player, Red Clay. It's not a bad bass line but the song just doesn't rock.

I tell you all this to give you an idea of what my skill level is. I can play all the above no problem but the Zeppelin tune was too fast. So, what tunes should I ask my instructor to show me?

Hey there,
I'm new to the forum - first post, but have played bass (Fender Jazz) for many years with a jam band. A few of my favorites to play are "Black Magic Woman" and any other Santana song, "Unchain My Heart", "Wild Nights" and anything Fogarty - especially "Born on the Bayou" and "Suzie Q". None of them are overly challenging, but so much fun to play.

Don't know if you have the opportunity to jam with other people, but it's the best way to really improve your playing and also to have way too much fun.

What do you like to listen to? Green Day rocks and is fairly easy to play. U2 is awesome too! You have to play what you like.

You can play Paranoid with no problem but Immigrant song is too fast?

Definately find others to jam with, a guitarist or drummer, or even another bassist. That will open up a whole new world.
Alot of Pink Floyd's bass lines are simple, look at Comfortably Numb.

:D look to whatever music you like for inspiration. i have been playing for 42 years and play anything from early 1900's jazz to alt. metal. it's what you enjoy playing. remember that aslong as music is with you it is a constant learnig proccess till the day you die. practise the songs you enjoy. if you think the peice is too hard simplify it to start then when you are comfortable with what you've got expand it until you have the entire song. practise, practise, practise and the songs will come. listen to the immigrant song again closly. what you think you hear as a fast bass line you might be confusing with the guitar part. it's not that fast. try "the ocean " for another good zepplin tune.
