There's no such thing as "best" when it comes to instruments. What kind of music are you playing? What tone(s) do you like? How many strings? Hollow or solid body? How much are you willing (or able) to spend?

All these things matter. It's like asking what ice cream flavor is best. Depends on personal taste and a bunch of other factors.

Having said all that, and since you're asking at a Fender board, I'll say a good Fender Jazz or Precision bass is a safe bet. Hard to beat a good Fender, and the 2008 models are great bang for your buck.

To echo Mastermold ... best for what?

I have a 1998 American fretless P-bass that I think is terrific for jazz but I sure wouldn't want to try speed metal on it. I have an MIM 5 J-Bazz with active Pups that's great for funk or just adding a different spin on a traditional pattern by working the B into it.

However, I just got (on EBay) an MIJ Jazz Special fretless that's working out nicely for funk and more upbeat tunes.

Straight old school rock, blues and blues-based jazz -- I use (yep, I know this is the Fender forum) my SG reissue. Very deep retro tone. For new age, experimental stuff, I'm working in the Ibanez 6 string I recently got, along with a few FX (chorus, etc.) I normally use only on guiitar.

I could probably eliminate a few by messing around with amp settings, but the point is that each has a natural tone and feel. When in my hands, a certain synergy happens that says "jazz" or "rural blues" or whatever to me. On that basis, it would be impossible for me to say which one is best with no context.

You also didn't say price point.

I would ask

What's The Best Bass Under $500.00?

What's The Best Bass Under $1000.00? or $2500.00

What's The Best Bass if money is no object?

To each his own but....I loved my 1992 Kubicki Factor bass. Incredible craftsmanship and sound. Very versatile bass! I wished I still owned it but my 1972 Jazz more than fills the gap.

Good point. Even in Bass Player's annual "best of ..." products issue, price point is a key dividing line. And (from memory), I think this year they concluded that once you get above the $1,200 - $1,500 range, a lot of bassists are into very customized instruments. For instance, they said that the new MIM J-Basses were a terrific deal in the $500 range. But it would be a bit unfair to compare them on equal footing with a $10,000 "made for you" bass!

Equally, you'd have to look at where you're typically playing, what amps you're using, etc. If I'm gigging in some armpit bar, I think "best" kinda goes out the window. But if I ever make it to the highly refined acoustics of Carnegie Hall, now I think I'd want a very precise bass and high end amplification system.

And as mentioned, "what" you're playing is a factor. Loud rock through a 1200 watt head ... I'm not sure subtle intonation is a feature I'd want to pay for at that volume level. Using my SG bass through a tube pre and into my bassman at low volume -- subtle changes stand out.

And so on ...

Maybe if you don't find any basses that you like you should check out a Thunderbird, i herd they are pretty good and I also tried one out and they do have a classic tone to it. but also there are different kinds of Thunderbirds avaible. Just try one out and see if you like em.
