I'm a long time guitarist, but I've always admired the bass as an instrument since I started playing guitar in the late 60's. The Fender Jazz Bass was always my favorite. About 15 years ago I found myself in a music store and saw a MIM Jazz Bass hanging on the wall. It was black with a white pickguard - a color combo I happened to like at the time. The price was right so it ended up coming home with me. After spending a few days playing my new toy, a thought suddenly hit me. Where were the chrome pickup covers, fluted knobs, and thumbrest that I was used to seeing when I drooled over the catalogs as a kid? This'll never do. So knobs got replaced right away. Some time later the thumb rest was added, then eventually the large bridge cover, and just recently the remaining pickup cover. Now it seems much "righter", LOL.

For the guy that asked about the thumb rest, I remember it coming with some kind of a paper template for locating it at the right spot.

The "tug bar" can actually be located anywhere to suit the player's taste -- even above the strings, where Fender actually moved it to on the mid-70's models. For total authentic "vibe" it should be used in conjunction with the chrome cover set and the 11-screw pickguard. I think it would probably look out of place on a "modern" Jazz Bass like a Stu Hamm or a 5-string though......

Technically it's only a tug bar if it's below the G string. When placed above the E string, it becomes a thumb anchor, and it is as an anchor that it has its greatest utility.

Originally, the electric bass was intended to be played with the thumb; hence the tug bar for the fingertips. This strikes me as very odd, as the electric bass was intended to be an alternative to the double bass, which is generally played with the side of the fingers and the fingertips.

In any case, I don't think a thumb anchor looks out of place on any bass. It serves a much-needed purpose for those of us who play fingerstyle exclusively. But, if you are going for looks over utility, knock yourself out.

I have a 60th Anniversary J-bass...

Replacments/Mods...

Swapped stock bridge for a BadAssIII

Swapped stock PUPS with Lindy Fralin (+5% overwound) Split Coil PUPS

Swapped out S-1 wiring harness with an RS Guitarworks Vintage Upgrade harness with a PIO tone cap.

Plays like butta', has no hum WHAT-SO-EVER, and can get a HUGE array of killer bass tones 8)

Pictures to come later....

On my '08 MIA Jazz, none except for Dunlop Straplocks, on my Squier VM Jazz, straplocks again, a thumb rest, and proper traditional black Jazz bass style knobs, that's all. They didn't need anything else, they both were pretty much good to go straight out of the box.

I turned the adjustable screw down in the control cavity of my Jazz Plus. Too much high treble sizzle from the Kubicki pots and stuff. I might have to buy new pickup covers. I let a guy borrow the bass for a good while. He musta used a pick 'cause there's a hole growin'.

That's the new, as of 2008, Fender HMV(High Mass Vintage) bridge. I really like the looks of it compared with the previous bridge.

I always liked the Midnight Wine color of the MIMs, especially with a black pg. It wasn't until I saw the Candy Cola in person at a GC that I fell in love with it and wanted one.

Switched the stock bridge on my MIM Classic 70's jazz with a Gotoh 201. Feels a lot more stable and more well-made than the stock bridge, really happy with it!
